Hi everyone!

I always wanted to know what was best. Washable blue you can get stain out of your clothes but the opposite of permanent blue. But Permanent blue has a deep, darker and richer colour. What do you think? I just got permanent blue in my new fountain pen. :gaah: :roflmho:

Thanks.

Below is my fountain pen model.

What's "best" is what you have on hand. thumbup.gif

Looks like you've got enough permanent blue to last for awhile, so I'd use it. And that's what I prefer. I pay close enough attention to things to not be overly concerned about getting ink on my clothes.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

For me, it doesn't really matter. I choose my inks simply according to a colour I like. My "main " blues are Éclat de Saphir, Visconti, Bleu Nuit, MB etc etc. I don't really need a permanent ink. On paper, that is. As a matter of fact, I even like a bit on my fingers. Looks good!

There are plenty of dark blues that aren't necessarily permanent - see Diamine Majestic Blue, see many manufacturers' blue-black inks.

If you spill ink on yourself a lot, a washable ink is best.

If you spill water on your written documents (or those who receive them do), a permanent ink is best.

I'd learn to permanent being best, assuming that you want your documents to survive. If you only take notes that are fleeting in nature and don't need to last, a washable ink will do you well and save your clothes.

Too many pens; too many inks. But at least I've emptied two ink bottles now.

Some washable inks disappear after the paper has been carried in the breast pocket of a sweaty shirt. I learnt the hard way--fortunately the text written was not crucial. In addition, I find that the colour of many washable blues is way too light for my liking, and is also prone to fading. In particular Pelikan Washable Blue will fade when you rest your hand on the text for some time (heat? not sweat, certainly). I have had day-old essays with areas of different colour intensity where my hand was. Were it not so annoying, it would be funny. Oh, and dont expect to read your writings in a few years' time--within less than a year the ink fades so much it cannot be photocopied.

I do like the colour of some (more) permanent blues, such as Aurora Blue and Waterman Blue-black. The latter is a very good recommendation if you can get your hands on it. (It seems to be out of stock in Singapore pen-stores.) These are slightly better in terms of fading and water resistance. The former is a very characterful dark blue-purple ink. However, if you need fade and water resistance out of a conventional ink, black ink is still the best. Even for inks like Quink or the cheap ink that comes in Muji cartridges, the black will merely change to a brown or green-yellow upon fading or water contact. Pelikan is cheap and good for fade and water resistance (not to mention good dark colour) but it is very dry. I cannot use it in my F-nib Mujis, only my M-nib Sheaffer Prelude.

I guess it comes down to personal choice. Personally, I dont like washable blue. Given the choice, I would pick permanent blue any day. Oh, and most inks will wash eventually off clothes.
