An Interesting Ink For Use On Blue Paper?

The Kid Line

+1. It's not an obvious choice, but I received a letter with brown on blue once, and it looked great! Another unexpected choice that looks great would be grey ink.

Ryan.

Grey was a colour that I was thinking as well. Glad to see I'm not totally crazy. :P

If you want your wife to like the bottle as much as the ink and money is no object, try an ink from Iroshizuku.

Yes, indeed....in one of those bottles, the colour would probably be less important to her!

Those inks are amazing, with lovely bottles to match.

I will have to see if my local fp dealer carries this ink. The suggestions for dark brown have me truly intrigued, so thank you one and all for those.

I have recently placed my order with Smythson, and after talking with their head of Customer Service, they have agreed to throw in a few extra pieces of paper for me to test inks out on. Once those arrive and I conduct my tests, I will be sure to post the results for all.

Would it work to send out small pieces of your paper for other FPN members with lovely inks to try for you and then mail back.... so you don't have to buy all the different inks yourself?

That is a cool idea.

This sounds fun! I would participate. Unless, of course, you want an excuse to buy a lot of new inks :roflmho: ...in which case, forget I said anything

Yes!

I think I might be able to get about 16 pieces to send out.

Would anyone be interested in helping out?

The UK is a fair way away but I have (Erhem) inks in my position, so would be happy to help out if you have the time for some transatlantic transfers!

My anniversary is October 10, so as long as I have everything together by the beginning of October so I won't have any last minute scrambling, I'll be happy.

In other words, I've got time for a shipment to the UK.

Hello,

For years I used the ELCO AIrmail Blue paper, and used the two approaches below.

I see either a fully saturated blue, such as the Private Reserve 'American Blue', which can be diluted to about 70% without a performance problem. It has enough 'zip' to raise itself from the paper.

OR

Using an ink with lower saturation will allow a lot of the paper's colour to come through. If one takes that approach, then I would suggest Herbin's 'Larmes de Cassis'.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are some ink samples on the paper. I'll also mail the original so you can see it up close as my photo doesn't portray the colors well enough. Both Levenger inks feathered. My favorite is the Waterman Havana.

Wow, jbb, fabulous work. What pen/nib did you use, and are you doing a a modified Copperplate? I've been working on copperplate myself and am looking for some variations on letters. Any suggestions?

And for what it's worth, the Waterman Florida looks great on that paper. The Noodlers Red Black also looks great, but I'm sure it helps to see it in person.

Thank you. I used a dip pen with a Birmingham Pen Co. #225 nib. I consider my handwriting to be inspired by Spencerian writing not Copperplate. I personally like to write with firm, flexible, sharp dip nibs and recommend them.

Wow, jbb! That's fantastic and such beautiful handwriting.

As I'm sure you're aware, my handwriting is nowhere near as beautiful. . . or legible

Thank you so much!

I have used a similar blue paper before with Classic Turquoise [Parker Quink, which I can't find any more]. Sometimes too much choice can make a problem harder!

Thank you. I mailed the original on July 26th so you should have that soon. Just wait until you see Indigirl's handwriting -- it's so beautiful. :cloud9:

I'm on holiday starting Tuesday, so I should have the mail waiting when I get back.

At this rate I'll be shamed into improving my own handwriting.

I have just got some Smythsons Nile Blue and have found that, as with Bond Street, the dark blues and purples look best(to me), although Baystate Blue also looks very nice.

It's toss-up between BSB, Diamine Sapphire, and La Reine Mauve(this is my first choice). Aurora Black was, IMO, a bit disappointing (not 'black' enough to give contrast...boring).

It is very nice to write on....I had previously been sent some varied samples by Smythson .... they do make lovely paper, and give good customer service.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
