Non Fp Review: Pilot V Ball Rt

Recommended Posts

Like a ditz, I accidentally posted this in "Pen and Paper Paraphernalia" instead of "Pen and Paper Paraphernalia REVIEWS". Ackkk. Moderators, feel free to move the original post and delete this, or keep this and delete the original post....

Anyway...

Pilot V Ball RT

-made with "real ink", according to the packaging (as opposed to...what?)

-great construction: clip is springy, the retractable point means that you can open it with one hand AND no cap to lose. Rubber grip ensures no slipping out of your hand.

-takes highlighters VERY well, unlike the Jimnie Gel Rollerball (which, I discovered too late, posses gel ink that tends to clump up at times)

-extra fine point!!!

-refills available :)

NOTE: The scanner made the ink seem lighter than it is; though it is lighter than both the Zebra Jimnie and Uniball Signo, it's still really nice and dark.

Nice doodles! Just curious, how smooth did you find the pen? That's usually a big factor for me when I choose pens. I'm wondering because I have a Vball but I never use it because it's really toothy (I think that's the term y'all use, anyway, it's not one of my words). It came free in a pack of Pilot PreciseGrips, but I'm thinking I'm just going to throw it out; I really didn't like it.

Lyssa:

I'm surprised. I'm the King of Toothy Complainers. I detest scratchy pens. I use a ton of Pilot Precise V5 and find them quite smooth. My complaint is I get a half week of work out of them I've used a Balance like Pilot or is it Pentel(none currently handy) F500. Those are smooth also with a 0.5 mm line and last at least a week of work writing. I write a LOT. Most of my notation is on Carbonless carbon paper, requiring me to go through 5 total pages. The F500's are the best writing, perfect line width, least likely to smear, longest writing of all RB's I've tried. I think I've tried them all. I'm open to suggestions. Now I'm venturing into Gel Inks for the 4 copy forms, in Pilot G series, 0.4mm, 0.3mm, etc. Also trying a bit of every Gel Ink, thin line JetPens has to offer. Sorry, your V5 test went so poorly, they work great for me. I buy them in 12 pack lots, Jim

I use a ton of Precise V5s as well - it's the Vball that I don't like. The V5s and V7s, and the PreciseGrips are absolutely amazing. Pilot G2s are also really good.

+1 on Vball dislike. I love the V5 Precise RT's, but the Vball is very scratchy in comparison (and much uglier IMO).

:D Before I discovered fountain pens, the Pilot Precise V5's were my go-to pen. :) I had used them almost exclusively for half of my high school year. :D I've since refilled them with my favourite fountain pen ink and now have the best writers where fountain pens would risk getting lost.

Wow, that's really surprising! Maybe it's a hit-or-miss in terms of scratchiness? Because mine is pretty smooth. I mean, it's not FP smooth, but as far as non FP pens go, I have absolutely no complaints.

Does anybody else find it scratchy?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
