Which Diamine Ink Colors Are Water-resistant?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I've tried only a handful of Diamine inks, and of these I've found that Sapphire Blue and Pumpkin are quite water-resistant. By water-resistant, I mean here that I briefly soaked (~couple of seconds) paper written with these inks in tepid water twice (letting the paper dry completely after the first soaking), and enough ink was left on the paper after the soakings so that the handwriting was still quite legible. Of course, some of the ink washed off too in the first soaking.

What other Diamine ink colors are water-resistant? I've really come to like how Diamine ink writes and look forward to trying some more of the colors.

I keep coming back to my Esterbrooks.

Of course their Registrar's Ink, as an iron-gall ink, is waterproof.

I tested Imperial Blue, Majestic Blue and Midnight: they ran off to join the circus at the first touch of water. Turquoise fared rather better. I haven't tested Teal yet, but given its green component it might do well too. Ditto Mediterranean.

I love Registrar's Ink, both for its permanence and the way it deepens from a palish blue-black into a dark, sonorous shade that looks like it will outlast the writer!

Thanks GV. I'm going to put Registrar's Ink in my "to-spend-money-on" list. :)

Well I hope they find happiness in the circus. Thanks for the test. I got a free Turquiose cartridge from Diamine which doesn't look to me like turquoise, so I'm scratching my head about that. I've also tested Diamine Ultra Green which has no water resistance at all. But that won't stop me from using this ink because I like the color and the flow.

Diamine Imperial Purple also seems to have some water resistance (I just tested it).

Thanks for the info about Imp. Purple. In general Diamine isn't a range to buy for its waterproof properties. That aside, the inks are so lovely to use that it's worth having a few around. And the 30ml bottles from the manufacturer's site make it dangerously easy to have more than a few!

  • 6 years later...

I need water-resistant inks — at least after blotting, if not soaking. I have found that Sargasso Sea is water-resistant enough for me. I recently spilled a few drops on Oxford Blue, and found that it made the words illegible.

Arttonic papers make you want to write. Enjoy them on Instagram if you can't get them in person.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
