Waterman Carene

Of late, I note that current-day Watermans are more often than not offered with only the Mediums and Fines. I like the older Watermans from the Late 80s /90s with the L nib which I typically have reground to Broad Cursive Italics or Stubs. Am thinking of getting a current-production Waterman Carene with factory stub nib. A few questions:

A) Does Waterman still offer Stubs on the Carene?

B) If i get a good deal on a new Carene with F or M nib would Sanford/Newell switch nibs for me , painlessly?

C) Does anyone know of a good seller in UK or Europe selling Carenes with stub nibs? (BTW are Italics or BBs available?)

Thanks in advance.

Rajesh

The Online Pen company sell Carenes with stub nibs as does Lewertowski on ebay - both good sellers.

Most of mine came from Lewertowski [Pen Seller From France]. They come in obliques, stubs, and broads, but no italics or anything broader than a B.

As for swapping nibs, check the prices on the nib sections J.M.L. has on his website and see if it's cost-effective for you.

Thanks, I checked on his ebay store site. Does he have a regular website as well? Anyway, after the above exchange bought a Blue Carene Deluxe off of him on ebay (says fine nib, but small print says he will do a nib exchange on any Buy it now item ....so asked for a stub), so now the patient wait! Thanks for both your responses. Cheers, Rajesh

Hi Rajesh,

In answer to your question - yes Waterman still offer different nib grades on their pens. I tried to attach a nib replacement form to give you an idea of the different grades that are available but I'm getting a message saying I'm not permitted to upload this kind of file. In summary, here are the nib types they offer for replacement with the Carene:

Most good retailers will manage the nib replacement for you rather than requiring you to send off yourself, but I think you can still do it on your own if you prefer.

We have one Carene nib out for a stub replacement at the minute and it's taking longer than we would like to get it back. Waterman told us it would be 8 working days from when they receive it to when we would get it back, but it's looking like it will be about 12 working days of their latest estimate is correct.

And as a shameless plug, we have some Carenes listed in the Lucky 7 Pens store currently in case you are interested: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Lucky-7-Pens

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
