“With the strongest and most experienced army in Europe, we will significantly strengthen the security of Europe. We are already doing this by defending our part of Europe and dying for the values we share with you.” — Dmytro Kuleba, May 16, 2022 at the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU.

Have you ever drawn a portrait

Unfortunately, no, but I will try. Before the war, I drew only Ekaterina Kuhar and her husband Oleksandr Stoyanov.

Thank you.  The story is sad but your drawing captures him well.

The traditional appreciation in the military, using the chess analogy, is that Infantry is the Queen of Battle and Artillery (the cannons on the patches above) is the King of Battle.

So, the love is…
There is love to someone, there is love to parents, there is love to country. And can passion to fountain pens be considered as love? :))

I believe that the king and queen of battle associations date from the 17th or 18th centuries. Aviation as a component of warfare dates from WWI, and air superiority as a tactical and strategic concept came shortly after and was proven as an essential during WWII, It has changed how wars are fought.

Yet, what we are currently seeing is a resurgence of small unit tactics that would have been familiar in the ancient, tribal world, the Vikings of the Middle Ages, and the Native Americans of the old west.  I suspect that the Ukraine's recent triumphs over the Russian invaders owes much to such tactics.

I remember reading or hearing that during early battles in the American War of Independence, the English were quite appalled at "American" tactics: instead of marching in formal units the way the English did, the colonists took a cue from the Native Americans -- they hid behind trees and buildings and such and tended to act more like snipers, picking off individuals that were in range.

All true.  By the time of the Napoleonic Wars, European armies had 'skirmishers' that used similar tactics to harass the opposing army's movement on the battlefield -- European battles usually taking place at the time on open farm or grazing land.

Below is an image of the French cavalry charging the British and Dutch lines.  In the background is Hougoumont Farm, a focal point of the battle's action, in flames.  You can see how open the field of battle is to allow movement of massed infantry and cavalry formations in this picture.

The British also considered the Colonists' behavior to be "ungentlemanly"; the snipers would shoot the British officers first, leaving the troops with no one to give them orders.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

That is a timeless sniper tactic continued today.

Americans, including Francis Marion(on whom the movie "The Patriot" was based) employed guerrilla tactics; that's what successful smaller armies usually have to do when facing a richer and larger adversary.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
