Hi all, could anyone point me out to a pen shop in Osaka Kyoto area that sells with lower than MSRP price? Say about 30% discount? I'm looking to buy possibly a decimo and a Sailor Sapporo. Thanks.

That's not easy to come by. Most Japanese stores sell at MSRP. 30% is a pretty steep discount in Japan.

You could try looking through Rakuten for stores in the area and see what the online prices the stores are offering. I see 14% discounts from places like Buneido which is in the area.

You will not get a 30% discount on Decimo or Sailor Sapporo. You can try, just say "Makete kudasai" which means something like: please reconsider the price.

I second Morita Pen Shop. He has a very small shop, packed to the gills with amazing stuff. He is an honorable dealer and will give you his best price.

I'll add my strong endorsement to the Morita Pen Shop. Small doesn't begin to describe it ... there is barely room for two customers along with Mr. Morita and his mother. That said, he stocks an unbelievable number of very high quality pens. His selection of Japanese makeres with some of the unique nibs - I am especially fond of the Sailor nibs - is extraodinary. He is a very knowledgeable and reputable dealer and he'll give you a fair deal. His English is limited, but the language of pens translates well. Make the trip to this shop, you won't be diappointed.

In addition to the Morita Pen Shop, the Hanshin Department Store near the JR Osaka Station has a very nice selection of fountain pens and a fairly friendly staff. They carry most western brands and Nayaka Fountain Pens, which Mr. Morita does not carry. It's a big store and you won't get the discount that Mr. Morita proves, but it is better than most. They will gladly let you dip pens, etc.

I'm planning to make a trip to the Morita Pen shop. How does he manage to get such big discounts compared to Department Stores such as Takashimaya and Hankyu? Just curious.

Regards

I have never been to the Morita Pen shop but my guess is that he is willing to take a hit on his profit margin in order to stay in business. I doubt he gets a better discount than other stores, which probably buy & sell in much higher quantities!

Most old-fashioned stationery shops in Japan are going out of business as they can't compete with the big box stores that can offer one-stop shopping for everything you need. The real old ones seem to keep their doors open (a few days a week, anyway) just because the business losses they can claim offset personal taxes for the owners. A lot of them still have NOS products from the 70's and 80's going for the original sticker price! I did try buying something at an old place in my neighbourhood once but they had misplaced the price lists and receipt books! In other words, they were not interested in selling anything.

Providing old fashioned knowledgable service and competitive pricing in a market that doesn't normally give discounts tells me that Morita-san is passionate about his work and isn't ready to throw in the towel. I'd love to visit. Maybe next year!

They temporarily moved to the new location, due to the reconstruction of the old store building.

For visiting the new location, please visit their site, http://morita.ne.jp/abouts/index.php .

If you dig the piles of their fountain pen stock, you will find rare out-of-production pens in discount price. Also by your request, the store change the nib, if it is compatible. (It might cost you.) Enjoy the trip to Osaka.

I've just been to his new/temporary location in Osaka, which is just a few blocks away from the location shown above. Small, and filled to the brim with what seems like most of his stock in boxes in the center of the room, but still with many, many pens on display and exceptional service. I'm under the impression that he's at this temporary location until 2013? Don't quote me on that, but that's the impression I got. Anyway, while I wasn't able to look through his offerings of vintage pens, I did get a Sailor Professional Gear for a good price, and he also had them in a very nice blue color that was made in a custom run specifically for his store. I opted for a black pen, but it really was a nice color. I can't recommend him enough. I'll certainly be back to empty my wallet there again when I am next in Osaka.
