Aurora pens leak

I posted this in the repair forum but I thought that I should post here also.

Two of my Aurora pens developed the same condition. A leak of ink from the join between the ink window and the body.

One is an old Optima and the second is a special addition for Stilo Fetti in Rome. Do I send them back to Aurora or is this something simple that a good restorer can tackle?

Should I worry for the rest of my Aurora that they might develop the same condition?

Although it is likely that a good restorer could fix the leaks, I would send them to Aurora. They should know about the problem, and they will not find out otherwise. (Unless their turnaround time has changed in the last six or nine months, they are pretty good about sending back the pen within about four to six weeks.)

Can you explain why you find that relevant to the poster's original question: whether to send the pen to a restorer/repairer or to Aurora?

 

I skimmed the thread, which seems mostly complaints about the length of warranties and additional costs in and out of warranty. Were the Aurora warranty on the pens in question only two years -- the Stilofetti might have a different warranty since the pen is from 2000 -- it still doesn't address the question of who's best to repair the pen in and out of warranty, additional cost or no. Sending it to a 3d party party would no doubt incur a cost, and it's an open question whether Aurora would or wouldn't charge for the problems in question. And as Hari implied, seems odd for a manufacturer to refuse to repair a modern out-of-warranty pen.

 

Were they my pens, I would send them to Aurora. That pen is based on the Optima/88 design, so if there's an issue where the section meets the barrel, then Aurora should know about the problem, know how to fix it, and would have the spare parts. I haven't heard any horror stories about Aurora, heard some good things from my local shop.

 

Antonio, I have an old Optima, while it doesn't leak, the section is loose and moves. I've thought about sending it Aurora to fix and my local store said he'd send it for me. But it's an original green Auroloide Optima -- the one's with the Auroloide that shrank (badly), which is probaby the cause of the problem. I'm disinclined to send it to Aurora for fear they won't send me the original barrel back; pens with this Auroloide they tend to destroy and send replacements.

 

The rest of my 6 Optimas/88 are fine.

I am not trying to get a free repair. In my opinion, it is ridiculous to ask a pen company for a free repair after 2-3 years.

 

My concerns are (1) quality of work, and (2) time of return.

I do have several other Auroras and of course I would like to know whether this is a common problem.

 

Yesterday I was looking at a 88 demonstrator. If it is the same with the Optimas (I think it is) there

it is clear that this is not a difficult repair. There are threads at that point and as long as one have remove

the adhesive/sealant, it would not difficult to apply another adhesive/sealant.

 

Anyway I would still like to hear more from those of you with similar problem.

I had the same problem with my 85th Anniversary pen and sent it back to Aurora (after 2 years) and they did a great job of repairing it. Obviously, shipping will be at your expense.
