Sheaffer Fineline Ink Sac

Just picked up a Sheaffer Fineline FP and BP set today that appears to have never been used (came with box too!)

Anyway, the pen appears to be perfect, except the ink sac has dried out. I tried the lever and starting to hear crinkling, so i stopped. I'm guessing this pen has never been filled, so the ink sac became very dry and brittle.

 

More to the point, is there a way i can replace this without professional help? And if it does require professional help, how much would it likely cost? I don't want to sink a ton of money into this pen if it isnt going to be worth it.

Also, i can get the nib unscrewed, but how the heck do i get to the sac to take out/replace?

$30 bucks max for somebody to do it. maybe more or less a little bit. then shipping.

i have the exact same problem with the exact same pen, I believe the sac is ripped too, because after pouring water into the barrel, it seeps out of the lever area.

i have sac confusion with this pen too! just went on the boards to see if somehow the sac is SUPPOSED to be wedded to the barrel! (hey, you never know...) i can't get it out with tweezers. i can get the nib out fine, and the lever works fine... no leaking of the sac... it just STAYS PUT. it looks almost like it's silicone, too, not rubber. hmmm. i want to fix the leak that i get when i use the pen (it leaks a bit from the join at the nib), so i took it apart - which is when i noticed that i couldn't get the sac out!

This should tell you all you need to know. The section is friction fit and should come out with some gentle turning and wiggling, and gentle heat. Gentle is key, as fineline plastic is thin.

 

I can't remember the proper sac size, but I think a 16 would do it.

 

These are good pens to try as a first repair - not too expensive if you err.

Yes, yes - very good advice. The section is more prone to cracking if the feed unit is not installed.

Thanks to all! I had been trying to remove it WITHOUT the nib in place, but was hesitant to use any kind of pressure. I'm going to attack this thing again tonight when I get home. Also picked up a couple of Majestic lever fillers that have some solidified ink sacs in them.

wait, so if i keep the nib screwed in an pull it, the sac will come out with it? never mind, that doesnt work only the nib pops out and the feed come out. I can't get this damn sac out! tweezers arent working either

You want to keep the nib and feed in to provide support as you pull the section. The sac may or may not come out with teh section, but you need to get the section itself out.

Hm, i see. The problem is i pulled with the feed and nib and just those two came out, the section stayed in there (the part that screws into the barrel). I'm not good with repairing these pens at all! haha
