Favorite $100 Pens

I'm sure this topic has probably been done before, but searched and couldn't find anything; so, here goes . . .

 

What are some of your favorite new pens in the $100 price range? I'm especially interested in pens with good fine and x-fine nibs.

Oh my, there are so many pens in this price range, you shouldn't have any trouble finding one at all. Especially if you pick up one second hand on the board here--which I would recommend.

 

You can find a Parker 51, Lamy 2k, Pelikan 2++, pretty much most Sheaffer vintage pens (my personal fav). I'll let others fill in the blanks.

Slightly above $100 [they're like $130-140ish total depending on shipping], but I think the Sailor 1911m and/or Sapporo are real winners, especially if you want a good fine or x-fine nib. Also, there are a decent number of eBay auctions where you can in fact purchase one of those Sailors for about $100, if not a little bit cheaper.

Honestly, I've yet to pay $100 for a single pen -- the closest is my 1945 Parker 51 Vacumatic, which was $85 shipped in restored, ready-to-use condition from a seller here on FPN. Next behind that is my 1970s vintage Sheaffer Imperial VIII (touchdown filler, inlaid Imperial style nib), at $65 restored and shipped with reground fine stub nib, also from an FPN seller. All of my other pens were either very inexpensive (under $20 -- mostly under $10 -- for every pen I've bought new) or received as gifts or trades in "ready to restore" condition.

 

My current favorites are my two Eversharp Skylines, my Majestic, and my Esterbrook J. All magnificent writers, and any could be replaced in "ready to restore" condition for under $20 (though for the Skylines it might require some patient eBay shopping).

Dave, that seems to be the best ever reply to the 'Help me find a pen' posts.

At some point, there may well be a need for a FAQ / Pinned Thread for such queries. (I'm working on my own boilerplate)

 

But:

My favourite with XF F nibs. Hmm

• I shall translate to 'My favourite Asian with an F nib'. Seems fair enough, yes?
• No mention as to use, so the firmness or flexibility of the nib is unknown. So I'll go with 'general writer - cursive text'.
• No mention as to mass / girth / length, so an industry 'standard' resin/plastic pen.
• Ah let's see: yes indeed - the Pilot Custom 74 with a Soft Fine <SF> nib. WooHoo!!
• Also, as is my approach, one needs a knock-around / back-up pen: So, a tip o' my red beret Basque to the $15 Sheaffer 'No Nonsense' in see-thru Red, <F> on request. (I would've bought that, then spent the other $85 on ink & ammo.)

Today, I'm off my Pelikans, so no M205 with a Binder Waverly XF. Coulda been nice, yes? But 'no' for today.

 

And this after I bought a Duofold Maxima for far less than $100 earlier today? Oh well.

I don't have too many $100 pens but I do use my Sheaffer Imperial in my daily rotation. I didn't actually pay that much for it but inflation has bumped it into that range over the years.

The Pilot Custom 74 is a good option with a variety of nibs. The two I had were slightly finer than Sailors with a bit less flow. My preference in Pilots are the Elite pocket pens from the 1970s with 14k fine nibs. Black with gold trim and sometimes sold as the "Socrates", these pens are always on my desk. Mine were purchased several years ago virtually unused for $45 but they probably command more these days.

The Sailor Sapporo that I bought for just under $100 has better build quality IMO than the Custom 74 but fewer nib choices. The fine and extra-fine nibs are stiff but very smooth with great flow.

Lamy 2000. Best modern pen you can buy for $100. And it has a 14K nib.
