What pen for a doctor?

Recommended Posts

What pen related to medicine would you recommend for a present?

Every fountain pen can become a "doctor" pen but I would like to find something more specific.

I know the OMAS Doctor LE.

I also know the Conway Stewart 100 Doctors.

I saw a thrid one but can't remember which one.

Do you have any advice? Can you share any information about a nice "doctor pen"?

It'll great if the pen can be easily bought and not too rare.

I dont know what a Doctor's Pen Is? Probably a marketing gimmick to get people to buy expensive pens.

I am a doctor too and from experience I can tell you... unless your wife is in one of the well dressed specialties and spends most time in a clinic or on a desk... she is likely to lose/misplace whatever you buy her. So eb careful. If she is a collector... its another story...

The other issue these days with the profession is electronic med-records that are very common now... so there isnt very much to write anymore.. at least at work. So take that into consideration. Regardless if she tends to write a lot at work... remember that hospital/clinic charts dont use Clairefontaine 90g paper! They use the worst kind that bleeds through somtimes even with a ball point.

I really like the Pelikans as well as the Pilot 823 for work. They hold a ton of ink and with the right nib can be a lot of fun to work with. I have sucessfully infected a couple of fellow resident with the FP bug.

All the best in your search.

You are right. However, when you like your job, you sometimes also like objects which are related to it. What you call marketing can also be called a symbol.

You're right once again. I know that. However, in that case, anything above a simple BIC will be useless.

the same reason why people drive a porsche vs a toyota. from point a to b isn't the point. it's the experience and what it means to you personally.

My Neurosurgeon is a fp user, and in addition to a couple of ballpoints in his pocket, he also carries a Pilot Vanishing Point. While writing notes for patient records, he uses a tablet device of some sort, he uses his Vanishing point to hand write prescriptions.

My best friend from medical school (whom I infected with the FP bug) uses a vanishing point pen. At one time he used a Pelikan M100 and a Montblanc Lapis lazuli but found having to take the cap off inconvenient. I am a pathologist, so I use whatever my mood instructs me. Currently I am using a Lamy Safari and a Pelikan M600 because one is not enough!

An eye for insignificant details is a good sign you will do just fine in medical school...

As a sharp wit and powerful sarcasm is a sign that you already have.

Funny as I was talking to a friend/fellow FPN member who is a doctor and we both agreed Montblanc Agatha Christie with its snake clip is a good doctor pen (snake motif).

Only problem with this pen is that its pretty expensive.

Thanks for the suggestions.

On a strict technical point of view, the VP is a nice idea. Not really connected to medicine but it'll be useful at a good price and it's perhaps the solution.

The MB Agatha Christy is a great pen very close to what I'm looking for.

If you have another ideas... ;)

More advice, though I recall Dame Edna Everage saying that "there is nothing more valueless than unremunerated medical advice" !!

I am a surgeon in the UK (I guess of a certain age). I use fountain pens to write my patients' notes every day. I feel it adds a certain class and importance to what I write. My entries in the notes do rather stand out from the routine poorly scribed biro.

The problem is the paper. Hospital notes paper is poor quality. The solution is finding a rapidly drying ink with no feathering. Of course you have to have a pen/nib capable of such an ink.

After many trials, I mainly use a stub Carene or an EF Pilot (many styles) with Pelikan 4001 brilliant black ink for everyday use. I tend to use my OMAS Milord EF or Pelikan Souverän 1000 Fine nib to sign letters.

I do have a couple of the vintage white Esterbrook "Doctors" pens. I've never tried using them everyday, as I am worried the black ink would stain the section !

My colleagues all seem to be Mont Blanc followers, the Mozart size/shape/whatever.

Overall I would buy another Carene stub from the penseller from France anyday (the silver meridians version I have is wonderful, and can be wiped clean with some toxic sterilizer)

You mean she doesn't have any Pharma pens???

Pharma is not allowed to give gifts to physicians any more at least in NY state. SO NO Pharma pens... thanks Goodness!

I do think that the VP is a great option is she already doesnt have one. They come in excellent colors/finishes and if you get a binderised nib... she might really like it! the only drawback being... the ink capacity is very limited.

If you are merely looking for a nice pen... irrespective of practical value - I am sure many folks here will have excellent suggestions...

As far as the Toyota vs Porche argument is concerned - its ur choice and your money... but if one lives in Upstate NY, one doesnt purchase a 911 for the day to day commute! They end up sitting in garages for much of the year!!

Several years ago Bexley made an LE Doctor's Pen for Gaston's. Currently there are two pairs for sale on Regina Martini's site for Euros 650 for the pair and on e-bay for US$1,500 for the pair. One is made of chocolate ebonite and the other of orange ebonite and they are fitted with a solid 10c gold Caduceus clip.

AFAIK, it's the same in France: no more gifts.

I don't know if you have a budget but I came across this on ebay a few days ago and it made my jaw drop. http://cgi.ebay.com/Waterman-Doctor-Pen-Pencil-Thermometer-100-Yr-Set-RARE_W0QQitemZ360234280376QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item53dfa2e5b8

Edit: I guess it doesn't really fit what you said you were looking for since it's both hard to come by and rare, but I thought it appropriate :)

Some years ago, I gave my ex-wife and doctor an elegant, slender Parker 180 set. She used to write only with Emerald Green with this pen and used other pens for other colors.

My doc and his former PA both use Pilot VP's. They like that they can be ready to go with one hand and are great for short notes. Both kept a nice inkwell on their desks for refills during the day.

After 40 years of doing academic medicine, I can support the VP. Please note that many hospitals require that the few remaining handwritten notes (and some prescriptions) must be written in black (although I have gotten away with Noodler's Zhivago. Medium point was actually fine enough so as not to bleed through hospital paper. HOWEVER: a key is to use cartridges and carry a spare in one's pocket. Especially with the VP, in which both the converter and the cartridges have rather limited capacity, and if one is on rounds, it is possible to go dry. For capacity, a piston fill (e.g. Lamy 2000, which I also like) holds a lot more ink, but must be refilled by dipping into a supply of ink.
