I need a pen, can you give me some recommendations

Hello, I'm a student in USA now. As a college student, I can't afford an expensive pen. Can you recommend some pens below 50 dollars to me?

Thank you very much!

for an inexpensive, good everyday writer: lamy safari. If you like expressive writing, ask for a 1.1i (stub) nib. I have 3 of them with different nib choices, one usually gets room in my rotation because of its quality writing properties.

In my current rotation:

Pelikan 400 Brown Tortoise/14K Fine/J. Herbin Cafe des Iles

Lamy 2000/14K Medium/Lamy Blue-Black

Sailor 1911 Large burgundy/21K Naginata Togi Medium/Diamine Oxblood

Montblanc 146/14K Fine/Montblanc Racing Green

Rosetta blue/Steel Pendelton cursive italic/Pelikan Royal Blue

Delta Passion/18K Broad/Diamine Syrah

Welcome to FPN!!!

I would second the Waterman Phileas, I have one and I quite enjoy it. Smoothest nib I have (granted I have very few fountain pens) attractive color, and it has a substantial feel without being too heavy, which I feel is important!

Lamy Safari, or Al-star. If your willing to use bottled ink, then I suggest a Pilot 78g, or look in the market place here and look for an Esterbrook. Their vintage but if in working order they will last for a long time.

Welcome to the forum. I think this question will be better received in the Writing Instrument's sub forum, but the two biggie have already been named: the Waterman Phileas, and the Lamy Safari. If you want to learn more about these pens, go to the Pen Review's sub forum and search for these pens under the index. These pens are quite popular, and have many reviews.

In general, they are noted for their durability and flexibility. They are both C/C (converter/cartridge) fillers, so they can be used however you like. For me, it comes down to aesthetics and I just can't get on board with the Phileas' look.

I don't know about the Phileas, but you can get a Safari from swisher pens about as cheap as they come new. Incidentally, I would suggest getting a Dollar 717 (demonstrator). For your price, you can get one in all 3 colors and a couple inks. They're piston fillers (built in), I just got one a couple weeks ago and it has become my new favorite cheap pen. I think it's the only pen I have that has started properly for me every time I put it to paper, even after several minutes uncapped or several days capped. The only potential problem is there is no choice in nib size, you get a "finedium" as I've heard it, between a fine and medium (mine seems to be pretty fine). If you want a broader point, get the Lamy Safari.

Hi and :W2FPN:

There are many desireable pens you might want to look into.

Both Phileas and Safari are great choices, the Safari would be easier to procure as its a current model, and less costly.

Apart from those, you can't go wrong with any of these either - Parker 45(sadly,no longer made), Parker Frontier, Pelikan Pelikano, Pilot 78G, Pilot Prera, Sheaffer No-Nonsense(no longer made), Sheaffer Prelude.

You might want to check all the reviews in the review section and see which suits you best.

Good luck!

Edit to add: link

see if this helps, excellent article by a fellow FPNer.
