I have a Lamy Accent Brilliant medium and Lamy 2000 medium (not on your list). I always come back to the Lamy 2000. It writes a very good wet line and works well each time I uncap it - even if left for a week (but I try not too). My Lamy Accent seems to not like to start at times and writes a bit wider than a medium for my tastes.

Lamy Safari is a good low-cost pen.

*** I am a big Lamy fan because of their fast turnaround if your Lamy needs work. ***

If you can splurge a little, think about a Waterman Carene. I have also picked up a Waterman Carene Matte Black. They are a 'bit' heavy as it is metal, but it writes very good as well and no skipping.

I really think you should consider the Japanese pens. A Sailor 1991M or a 1911 (21k nib) are excellent writers and virtually indestructible (better than "precious resin," I hear). They are nice & black and have the classic torpedo shape, but are much less expensive than the MBs. You might also want to consider a Sailor Sapporo, but they are smaller pens than the ones you list.

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "F" nib running Birmingham Firebox

Montegrappa Elmo 02 "F" nib running Carmel Sea Blue

Sailor Cylint "F" nib running Dominant Industry Seaweed

Retro 51 Tornado "F" nib running PR Red Infinity Ink

Montblanc Starwalker "F" nib running PR Tanzanite

I would really appreciate some advice on what my first fountain pen should be. (I've only used dipping pens before).

Here is the link for the Ohto pen I have found: http://www.jetpens.c...roducts_id/3175

It's cheap, within my budget. I plan to use this for letter writing and maybe note taking. Any thoughts on it would be great!

Ohto is a good brand. I've heard that people like the Pilot 78G (I have not tried it). I do have a Reform 1725, which is a piston filler, but it's pretty small. Also a Pelikano.

It appears that your price point is quite low, but these pens would fit within your budget.

Let us know what you get!

I'll probably give it a try. I'm going to get an ohto converter and some J. Herbin purple ink to go along with it.

Yeah, my price point is very low, but that's the joy of university life, no? :)

My favourite pen color is black, and trim silver of gold.

I would vote for Lamy 2000, or sailor 1911 black classic.

Really it depends also on pen material.

It seem that resin gives a more classic look and feel than metal

I second the Lamy 2000. My next pick would be the Pelikan M215. I have the blue-striped version and love it.

+1

Thank you for all your replies

I dont really like the Ohto F-Spirit Fountain Pen

But the Lamy 2000 doesent seem bad,but i like the Lamy Studio or the Accent Brilliant more for that matter, are they good picks too ?

And which nib size would you recommend i see most of your like mediums, but i think that maybe a fine would be better ?

What would you recommend me ?

Also i like to carry pens in my pockets, but my Hemisphere got a thousand scratches from my pockets,i see the Accent Brilliant is pretty glossy too, would it scratch and if so,how can i protect it ?

I like the Lamy Studio too,can you tell me something about it ?

Thank you for taking the time to reply guys...

Kind Regards

Anthony

The Pelikans are good to carry in your pockets, they won't give you a leaking surprise, although they tend to get the screw caps loose, have to screw them a bit tighter than one would expect. Piston fillers, so will last longer between refills. As for the size of the nib you have to try and see (try to check them at a B&M before buying), mostly depends on the size of your lettering, and note that different brands are not strictly comparable, I think Pels are a bit on the broader side; on the other hand, you can have XF Pelikan nibs, not all brands have XFs.

The two Watermans of your list are nice lookers, let me complicate your life even more by guessing that you might like a LeMan 100 or 200, they are not current models, but their look is far from "kitchy", I got a like-new 200 from a reputable vendor for a decent price recently, I think less or about than the cost of a new Expert or Hemisphere. To me, the LeMan are some of the most beautiful pens ever made. Good luck

I'm a user, baby.

I specialize in inexpensive pens and they are GREAT fun. Plus they're easy to pass along when and if you want to streamline your collection.

I just got a charcoal Lamy Safari with 1.1 nib and the more I use it, the better I like it.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I'm a Pelikan lover, so of course I'll have to go w/them as my recommendation. The pens are well made, never leak and the service from Pelikan is impeccable!!!

To my eye there is no pen with less kitch than a matte, black, clip-less Denitrio Raw Ebonite Densho, but there is a price to pay for understatement. For this quiet, unpretentious whisper, it's more than $500!

You can read/see a review of it by Noble Savage here:

...although the model has a clip.

@handwriter

I am not too worried about leaks,i am just consirned that they might scratch, thats all

I am new to the whole fountain pen world and i just use cartridges by now, because i dont have a converter and i cant buy them localy...and dont wonna bother ordering them online.

When it comes to nib size,i think a fine suits me best...because thick lines are not really compatible with my handwriting and XF isnt a option since i sometimes have to write on low-quality paper and then it doesent work very well.I cant try locally because we dont have any fountain pen stores here where i live i can only order online.

Yes the watermans are quite nice,i have a mars black hemisphere right now and i love it,but i have a bit of a leak problem on the top of my nib when i close the cap (dont know why) and it got all scratched from my pockets,so i'm considering buying another fountain pen.

No offense but i dont really like the look of the pens that you recommended to me,definitely not kitsch but i just dont like them,i bet they are great pens.

@ Sailor Kenshin

Yes the Lamy Safari looks like a nice pen indeed i will probably buy one.

@ goodguy

as said before i dont really like the look of the Lamy 2000,what about the Lamy Studio ?

@ razr

Even thought i am a pro-German i dont really like pelikans compared to other fountain pen brands

@ Blotto

If i were to spend $500 on a fountain pen i would rather get one of the Montblanc's from my list...maybe if my e-business works out xD

I just want to thank all of you guys for your suggestions but what i really want to know is what you think about the following pens:

Accent Brilliant Finish

Lamy Studio (black)

Lamy Safari Charcoal

+1 . I'll put a few pence on the Namiki/Pilot Falcon pen. Available in resin and now in metal barrel as Falcon II. The kicker here is the nibs: luxurious 'Soft' designation, which are a joy to write with for long periods. -- S1
