Retro 51 Tornado

I came back to this thread and just realized my post was not quite clear: the Lincoln Ext will take a regular converter. The regular Tornados do not, hence my comment on the mini-converters and the suggested alternative.

I have one of the Lincoln extended fountain pens, medium nib. Came with a convertor. How do you like the pen? All of my other pens are Sheaffers. They have nibs that are quite close to the sections. The Retro 51 Lincoln's nib is w-a-y out there by comparison and it was difficult to maneuver of a few days while I learned to drive it. And the Schmidt is quite wet which allows inks like Sheaffer's turquoise and Herbin's Hematite to perform their lovely shading tricks.

There are only a few reviews of Retro 51 fountain pens on the interwebs and fewer of the Tornado series and fewer yet of the Lincoln. Some users have removed the lacquer coating with acetone to reveal a brighter copper patina. Don't think I'll do that for a couple of years.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Bogiesan, you are right, these models don't seem to get the thumbs up they deserve. I like all my Retro 51s, the Lincoln in particular. They nibs are very nice and very smooth for pens of this price point. My only gripe was with the regular Tornados, as they would not accomodate regular sized converters. But my homemade converters work very well and contain a nice quantity of ink. They are nice pens, indeed. Hope you are still enjoying yours!

My Retro 51 Lincoln does not get into my rotation as often as it should. I just need to remember it's in the box and get it out every few weeks!

I've been trying to mix a matching copper ink using, in various combinations, Sheaffer brown and red, Noodlers red and yellow, and Herbin 1670 hematite. Not successful yet but it's been fun.

Actually the EXT version of the Tornado now comes in three finishes and is pretty widely available. I have the white nickel version with a broad nib. Very smooth albeit very wet writer -- particularly with the no-name cartridge they included. And yes, it also came with an included full sized converter.

Long been a fan of the Tornado bp/rb pen, and especially their robust mp!

I highly recommend Diamine Ancient Copper. It's one of my favorites and is always in one of my pens. It (and several other Diamine inks) is available from xfountainpens.com as "Chesterfield - Ancient Copper" for a very good price. Give it a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

looking over at the beautiful celluloid on my duo 51.. need to get a refill for the nice roller ball..

the fountain pen is Really nice,

but the short ink cartridges are it's single drawback. Writes much nicer than my Safari, but ink capacity makes me forgo the hunt for carts.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
