President Obama's gift

Ok, I'll bite. What is the pen?

It looks like a Duofold, one with the newer styled double raised cap bands.

Wasn't there an extensive thread here back when the gifting happened? Conway Stewart?

There's another (somewhat tenuous, I have to admit) pen connection in photo 10.

Now, where is my prize??

EDIT: Doh, you said photo 10... So I'll be contented with a consolation prize.

The pen is a modern Parker Duofold. Because they are made in the UK (and of excellent quality), it would be a good British gift.

Pelikan 100; Parker Duofold; Sheaffer Balance; Eversharp Skyline; Aurora 88 Piston; Aurora 88 hooded; Kaweco Sport; Sailor Pro Gear

Looks like a pinstripe Duofold, or is that a reflection of the light?

The "Resolute Desk" is a desk for the Oval Office of the White House.

You may recall that this particular gift exchange included a gift by President Obama to Prime Minister Brown of 25 DVD's of American movie classics. This was met with less than enthusiasm on the UK side of the exchange.

As far as presidents using fountain pens, in all honestly they are probably completely impractical considering how delicate and finicky many fountain pens are.  Even the best of pens need consistent maintenance to keep them running.  The presidents day is filled from start to finish.  The Reagan librabry in Simi Valley, California displays one month of Reagans schedule and each day is broken down to the minute.  It is quote extraordinary.  I am sure they don't have time to constantly work about their ink levels and if their pen has been cleaned.

I have not really maintained my Pilot 734 in about 8 months.... other than fill it and occasionally wipe the nib....

A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out.

Yeah, I do not know what you are doing with the finicky pens, but my Pelikan is fine after 5 months. I fill it and use it. I even let it sit for a month, and I came back and it wrote without a hiccup. I also second the idea that there are enough people in the White house to maintain a pen or two. There are even two full time calligraphers, IIRC.

I seem to recall it being a risky gift. I read a report that said that the Gannet was an anti-slavery vessel. No one was quite sure how it would be received.

In what way could association with anti-slavery be seen as risky?

Anyway, from what I read, it seems like the pen wasn't part of the gift, just the pen stand. The pen in the photo is perhaps something Obama already had.

Has: Lamy Safari M, Lamy Studio Steel F, Lamy 2000 F, Ice Blue Pilot Capless M, Lamy AL-star, TWSBI 540

Wants: Pelikan M1000 or perhaps M800, Parker Duofold Centennial, Gold M for Studio, Lamy 2000 M, Visconti Homo Sapiens, some Kawecos and Rotrings
