Rohrer and Klingner: Alt Goldgrun (Old Gold Green)

Signum1

Recommended Posts

I have found R&K Altgoldgruen and J. Herbin Vert Olive to be similar. I like both colors very much. I have also found that the Altgoldgruen, when left in a pen for a long period, turns a muddy brownish color. Has anyone else experienced that (color change) or did I get a peculiar bottle?

How long is a long period to you?

I've been in a purple mood lately, so my Pelican White Tortoise filled with Alt-Goldgrün has been sitting for about a month. I just tried it, and it's as old-goldgreeny as ever.

This ink is so lovely that I can't imagine leaving it in a pen for very long - it gets used within a couple of days!

This is my all time favorite ink. I use it now about 75 per cent of the time - must order more soon and I guess it's England again.

Your glorious hand makes the ink look even more impressive ! WoW!

  • 1 year later...

I was told to get this ink right from the get go.

It was not to be found in the Heidelberg, a German University town.

Two or so years later, I finally got it by mail.

I now have three off the wall greenish inks. R&K Alt Goldgrun, Herbin Vert Empire and DA Sahara Gray (more a grayed green than grayed brown or sand).

I even dug out my old Sheaffer calligraphy set, because of the OP's review.

I got it in three pens right now. A maxi-semi-flex/'flexi' OF, a semi-flex F, and a Sheaffer B italic nib.

It's a nice shading ink.

I should have shopped by mail long before, even if I'm sort of old fashioned about that.

My green or greenish inks have grown by leaps and bounds with in the last few months. MB Winter Forest, Pelikan Jade, DA Moss Green, DA Sahara Gray, Herbin Vert Empire and R&K Alt Goldgrun.

And Lamy Green in a cartridge...can't forget that. :roflmho:

Alt Goldgrün is perhaps my favorite green ink, just behind Montblanc Racing Green. The shading is phenomenal (especially in a flexy nib), and its behavior is very, very good. I love the complex olive color. Racing Green, Alt Goldgrün, Rikyu-cha, and Vert Empire are my must-have green inks.

Signum1,

Thanks for another wonderful ink review. Rohrer & Klinger Alt Goldgrun is also one of my favorite inks if not my favorite. I have enjoyed it in firm medium, broad and stub nibs. Here is a pictures of my results with a broad nib ...

Does anyone have a writing sample with this ink and flexible nibs?

I picked up a bottle of this entirely on a whim. When I got it, the only nib that I could possibly see using it with was either broad or a stub. So, I ended up putting it in my Visconti Rinascimento with a custom broad italic. It works great.

Now, if only I had Signum1's handwriting... :notworthy1:

Hi Mauricio,

Unfortunately Alt Goldgrun didn't magically transform my handwriting, but it does work very well with a flex nib. This sample was written with a 1929 Sheaffer Balance on Clairefontaine paper.

Nothing wrong with that writing in my book! You shows the shading very well too!

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

geoduc ... Thank you so much for posting this writing sample. The ink behaves very nicely with a flex nib. Will have to give it a try. Loved your handwriting with that vintage flex nib.

Very nice review and samples. Gotta try this green. I´ll see if I find it here in Germany.

.... Rolf Thiel at www.Missing-pen.de has that ink. I ordered it from him last week.

I, too, have this R&K ink and really like the color! Wish R&K would start offering their inks in larger bottles, rather than the little ones!

No, small bottles are just fine...other wise I'd never be able to try the hundreds of inks that are on my list.
