Rohrer and Klingner: Alt Goldgrun (Old Gold Green)

Signum1

Recommended Posts

Lusting for old gold; I've made a discovery from the mineral deposit site called Rohrer and Klingner. With an Italic nib and some fine paper, I'm delighted to report back with a summary and a picture for those bitten by the gold bug recently.

I love this ink so much. I find its flow a bit stingy, but the color is totally worth putting up wtih it.

I'd like a lot of inks if my handwriting looked like that!! Where do we buy these inks int he US?

It took me like a couple of evenings to learn the italic script. Dude, if I can do it, so can you. You just need an edge pen. Take your favourite fountain pen with a medium or broad nib and send it to someone with the midas touch. A big name nibmeister will enhance the resell value of your fountain pen if you decide to part ways with it later.

Nice work, once again. I especially like how you managed to capture the light and dark variations (beyond shading): i.e. the contrast between the fourth & fifth lines.

@dashreeve, FWIW, the Inked Nib is closing up its virtual doors as we speak & Pendemonium is pretty low on R&K stock for the time being. Don't know if anyone else in the US is selling it, sorry.

Ryan.

I know they're based in the UK but The Writing Desk has stock at the moment, it can be a very hard ink to find (I ended up buying it from a shop in .

Send me a phial with your next letter and I'll send you a sample so you can try it out.

ETA: Signum - you're reviews are always excellent - your penchant for broad nibs really brings the shading out in this ink!

Thanks for this review of an ink I hadn't even placed on the map as something I could imagine buying, but you've got me curious to try it! The colour is definitely something else!

Signum,

Once more, a lovely review!

Ordinarily I would not have been interested in this color at all, but your reviews tend to bring out the best of so many shades.

Thanks for taking the time to share.

I used to think Herbin's Vert Olive was the greatest green ink, but when I tried this, I realised Vert Olive is just too light and bright. Alt goldgrün is such an amazing colour, very unique. I haven't even had any flow issues. To me this is a perfect ink - a magical green.

Hey Carl,

Thanks! I do remember you using this ink and I loved it then as well. Greens are my favorite.

Great ink. I have been using it and the R&K Sepia and Leipziger Schwartz. I like them all. The colors are very appealing.

R&K is not always available here in the US but it is worth the postage from the UK for me to get some.

I have found R&K Altgoldgruen and J. Herbin Vert Olive to be similar. I like both colors very much. I have also found that the Altgoldgruen, when left in a pen for a long period, turns a muddy brownish color. Has anyone else experienced that (color change) or did I get a peculiar bottle?

I have never left a pen inked for long enough - but thanks for the warning (assuming you didn't get a bad batch).

FrankB,

Did you tried writing with the muddy brown ink? How about a writing sample?

I often change my inks because I have a selection to play with, so I haven't experience the muddy brown ink yet. Perhaps others can chime in about the matter. I know the UK seller of this ink is currently out of stock again for the Alt Goldgruen ink. Perhaps the new owners of this ink reading this thread would post a comment about leaving the Alt Goldgruen ink in the pen over a longer period of time.
