And Show Us Your Rare Sheaffer's

I examined a couple of solid gold Sheaffer Balances from my collection, and I can confirm my recollection that they both have round-ball clips. One has indications of early-mid '30s assembly, and the other may have been sold as late as '43.

Rare Sheaffers?

Well, "rare" is such a strong ol' word...

Still...

Howzabout some "plain ol' " Sheaffer Snorkels in some not so "plain ol' " colors.

Collecting life can be strange. 4 Thin Model Snorks in 9 years, then 75 or so in two months.

Oh so humbling to a newbie... I only have one Shaeffer (Balance OS, lever fill, black). It is definately one of my smoothest writers.

I have been concentrating mostly on Parker Maximas (so the expense has kept me to just one every month or two), but this definately makes me want more Shaeffers!

Here is my entry to the list. A mint set of Snorkel Masterpiece pens. Left to me by my Grandfather, I don't think he ever used them.

Nice set Kevin! Yep, on my "want list" is a Masterpiece or Triumph Snorkel or TD pen and pencil. I love the look of gold! :)

Congratulations, Kevin, beautiful set, & even " MINT" !

A masterpiece snorkel is in fact the last snorkel version which is missing in my snorkel collection .

Already for years on my "wanted" list.

A few years ago a was bidding as high as $ 600.00 on a snorkel masterpiece pen- only the pen & not mint- it ended over $ 800 as far as I remember.

I wonder how high this one would sell on Ebay !

Enjoy your treasure !

Francis

Roger:

That's an interesting item. What was it made for? Was it a salesmans piece or maybe a presentation piece for somebody? Do you know?

Wow Roger! Thats amazing! I would like to see one of a Triumph nib. I think one of Sheaffer's ads did show how the Triumph was made, though.

  • 1 year later...

bump!

Hi All,

Well, I didn't expect to be posting again in this thread today, but a package of value arrived this afternoon from our esteemed Dennis Lively. Included therein was the pen you see here: a Black-and-Pearl Petite Balance (hope I've got the nomenclature right!) with the double cap band. It is now reunited with its mate: the pencil that comprises the other half of the set.

I'm posting to say a public 'thank you' to Dennis for his spectacular restoration job on this pen. To say that this little fellow "had some work done" would be in the nature of a drastic understatement. Let's just say...its presence here in such presentable form is something of a miracle. Amazing work!

The top image shows the pen and pencil together. Below is a close-up of the cap band detail.

If you like, check out the Esterbrook Forum -- for part two.

Cheers,

Jon

Or a Carmine Balance (Canadian) with unique (so far, in my experience) cap-band.

Hi,

I have something along the same lines done with the Targa nib.

I've posted these to other threads, but they may not be seen by some interested folks, so I'll put them here as well:

Unusual WASP; I wonder if this drew Parker's attention? That's Parker's design patent for the Vacumatic-style ringed plastic pen in the background:

This unadorned pen is a bit of a mystery. It is Radite (celluloid), bandless, oversized, trimmed in nickel, and it bears an 8-sized Lifetime nib though it has no White Dot:

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
