What are Schmidt nibs?

Rique

Recommended Posts

I´ve just seen on ebay a Rotring pen for sale fitted with a Schmidt nib. What are these nibs? Why isn´t this pen fitted with a Rotring nib? Are the Schimdts supposed to be better than the regular Rotrings?

I remember seen someone mentioning these nibs in some thread, but I haven´t be able to locate it...

best regards,

Rique

Schmidt is a well-known German nib maker. There is nothing wrong with a Schmidt nib, though I suppose the actual quality is mainly related to the specs someone gives them when they contract to have the nibs made.

I do not know enough about rotring pens to comment. Maybe Rotrings all come with Schmidt made nibs and the seller is simply letting you know who made the nib. Maybe the nib is a schmidt and replaced the rotring nib.....

Hmmmm, I am sure someone who knows Rotring will answer here and give you a more complete answer.

But I do feel safe saying that Schmidt is a known company. Good luck. j

I've found Schmidt steel nibs on a lot of odd pens over the years and they've all been pretty good writers. For example, here in RI there is a jewlery manufacturer named Colibri. The company is best known for lighters but they have dabbled in writing instruments and I've aquired five or six of their FPs from their factory sales. Almost all have had Schmidt nibs. All of these pens I aquired for less than $10 each and all of them write well enough to be included in my regular pen "rotation".

John

Hi,

Schmidt is a very good nib and is almost up to par with Rotring's nibs.

Rotring does make their own nibs.

Thanks John Cullen, jjb_13 and Dillo, for the replies!

I was rather curious about this nib because it has a Schmidt imprint on it - and I found it rather strange that a rotring pen would have a nib with an alien imprint. However, another pen has just surfaced, same model and nib (different colour). That probably means that this pen probably was, at some point, a regular production one - and not some sort of Frankenpen.

best regards,

Rique

Check with Brian Grey at Meisternibs. However, as of 2010, he said Schmidt did't make their own nibs but instead purchased the nibs from Bock or JoWo and assembled with their own feeds, collars, assemblies etc.

Only a handful of pen manufacturers make their own nibs. The ones that come to mind off hand are:

  1. Parker / Waterman
  2. Montblanc
  3. Aurora
  4. Cross
  5. Sheaffer
  6. Pelikan
  7. Sailor
  8. Platinum
  9. Pilot
  10. Some Chinese companies for sure

Most other have their nibs custom made for their pens by Bock (mostly, 90% I beleive) or JoWo and Schmidt, also IPG (Iridium Point Germany) - I am not sure if the last is a stand alone brand by itself or a model of nib by Bock.

Even the companies mentioned above may have nibs made for them for some models, eg Cross has had nibs made for some of its models from Pilot and Pelikan in the past (not sure about now)

Hence - finding a Schmidt nib in a new pen is nothing abnormal

Schmidt nibs come on many of the mid to high end fountain pen kits purchased by wood turners who make pens from kits. I am a very active wood turner, but I dislike the kit pens because they are unbalanced and have inadequate ink capacities. The Schmidt nibs, on the other hand are excellent. i have several and one of them is spectacular. Too bad the pen kits are designed by folks who use plumbing threads in their design.

Paradise pen makes a beautiful fountain pen called the Summit 5280. It has Schmidt nibs. This was the first fountain pen that I purchased, on sale, for $50 less than a month ago. The "fine" nib writes like my Pelikan 215 medium. Hope this helps you. I, too, am looking for other fountain pens with Schmidt nibs. They're very smooth and never skip.

IPG (Iridium Point Germany) Not necessarily made in Germany.

In that most 'iridium' comes from Germany many lower class pens have German iridium, and are some how allowed to write Germany also on their nibs.

I believe that Levenger uses Schmidt nibs in the True Writer line. If I'm mistaken,I apologize in advance. I have several and they all write nicely.
