Leuchtturm Notebooks

Can you verify whether the cover/label on the old-stock version did not say "ink-proof?"

The old one I received did not have the ink proof on the cover. Unfortunately I do not have a photo to show you but if you look at the stores selling the notebooks they tend to use pictures of the old covers for a visual description.

Thanks. I'm interested in these notebooks and have a couple of brick-and-mortar stores near my Manhattan office who carry them. Now I know what to look for.

The newer stock isn't 100 gsm paper, it's still 70 gsm

Cynthia corrected me when I had requested it. =)

She said she believed that the 100 gsm paper is available in Europe but not here in the States. bummer!

I'm looking forward to trying the journal out, since the piccadillys have turned out to be duds if you got a bad one :(

I emailed the Parent company and got a reply from Germany. In short he said that the Master Size Notebook will be even more improved because they have found a new paper supplier. Those notebooks will be 100gsm paper. As for the 70gsm it is decent, I did a couple of quick writing samples on one of the pull out sheets. There was a little feathering it is noticeable when you look closely (does not show up in the pictures but if you have the paper in hand you will see it). Sorry for the poor images, I am passing time at work and do not have access to a good scanner so I used my iPhone. Also sorry for any typos or poor spelling.

Uh oh. These look interesting. And you can get them in bigger than A4 unlined. For those that have the new FP friendly paper, a review would be really nice...

Here is the site where I received most of my information. You may also write them and ask questions. If I do order another one anytime soon, I will make sure and do a full review.

I ordered a large and a small from Journaling Arts yesterday. I expressly requested the newer version. When they arrive Tuesday, I will post a quick review. I have really grown quite frustrated with Moleskines; their paper quality is just so inconsistent. A few days ago I bought a 3-pack of pocket Cahiers; the paper is the worst I've seen: rough, feathers, bleeds and shows through to such an extent that only one side of the paper is useable.

I ordered and today received the small and medium-sized journals. Thus far my experiences with the paper mirror yours, except that I was unable to get feathering on mine. I used 4 different pens, from dry to gushing; in no case did I see any bleed at all and no feathering was apparent. The show-through is about what I saw in your images. On that basis, I would say the paper is an improvement over the standard Moleskine paper. But the 'ink proof' paper (has there ever been a worse way of describing a product?) seems quirky to me... It isn't quite a smooth as the Moleskine paper, and the ink-proof coating (I think) inhibits transfer of the ink from the pen to the page. It's very strange; I found my pen skipping in a few spots and this is a pen that doesn't normally do that.

The books themselves are generally an improvement over the standard Moleskines, with such niceties as spine labels, numbered pages, tables of contents, etc. The dimensions of the pocket and medium books are roughly comparable, though the Leuchtturm's are slightly bigger in height and width, while at the same time being a few pages thinner.

Finally, these books don't lay as flat as the Moleskines, even when pressed.

Is it the 'perfect notebook'? No. Would I buy more? Yes - and if the paper were a tad thinner (to prevent show through) and if the books would lay flatter (as Moleskines do), I would buy a case of them.

is it possible that the ink is skipping on the areas where you rested your hand? some ink/paper combinations are sensitive to natural hand oil - I had a Paperblank that was like that.

Not in my case. This happened on the first line of text I began to write in a fresh journal. It's really quite strange.

This is what I was thinking. Maybe the sweat or oily skin that seems to react. But I could have sworn I didn't touch that corner. Right now I'm trying to wear a glove on my left hand when I write in these books to see if it reoccurs. MJ style.

Thanks for pointing these out. I was trying to find a hardbound notebook for my copy of my notes, and this looks good. Not too expensive, many pages, numbered, and fp friendly. Basically all of my requirements.

I still have trouble finding the complete line of notebooks in all sizes here in the States or online...I ended up buying the 18 month planner in Master size because that's all that was available. It's beautiful and I love it, but a bit difficult to port! Any ideas on online suppliers or stores in the NY area?

There's a stationery store on 8th Ave a couple of blocks south of 14th St. that carries a few models, but not a broad selection. The store has "Typewriters" in its name.

Then there's another store nearby on Greenwich Ave. that has some as well. It's called Mxyzptlk. Don't ask me to pronounce it; it's the name of an old Superman foe.

I ordered several from the Kikkerland retail site, REVDESIGN.

Rat basterds sent me the pre-pen-proof paper stock. No wonder I can only use one side of the page. (Potty Mouth), even a pencil bleeds through.

And I researched this purchase thoroughly, so I thought.

The ink-proof is very good at withstanding even my wettest pen, a P51 that very nearly gushes ink. You will, however, still have show-through on the pages, even on the newer journals. A heavier paper would cure this; whether that's in the cards is anyone's guess. Still, I'm happy with the product.

I'm about halfway through my first Leuchtturm and I've come to realize that I have only one legitimate complaint about these notebooks. They don't don't lay completely flat, no matter how much you press them. This is a big point in favor of the standard Moleskine, which unfortunately has much inferior paper. Writing in a Moleskine is simply more comfortable.
