Pen for a Filofax

Carrie

Recommended Posts

My old filofax was lovely, nice large pen loop just right for a Parker 51, but sadly it didn't survive my washing machine flooding, so I had to get a new filofax. The replacement is the Personal Sized Adelphi in Damson and the pen loop on that is much smaller. Even though part of the loop is elasticated it's still a squash to fit my Decimo in, but as it just about fits, that's the pen that's in there at the moment.

Looking for pen suggestions, gold nibbed, so possibly vintage will be best.

When I had a filofax the Pelikan 400 was perfect for it. Also, A Montblanc Boheme. Both have gold nibs.

The MB Mozart is a very small pen with a smooooth nib - more or less made for small loops. If you're not an MB hater this might well be what you are looking for.

There will be a Reform 1745 in the post to you on Tuesday! Not a gold nib but a lovely slim piston filler. I've just given one to a friend who I have also given a Filofax to and it fits perfectly.

I use 2 filofaxes a Personal, plus an A5, The A5 has the most usage but the pen loops appear to be the same size on both, I either use a Pelikan 250 or I use my yard o led Viceroy standard Victrian, both fit great

A slim version Targa would be perfect.

Interesting answers so far.

IANAN, you're a star. Thank you :)

I like the look of that Pilot Cavalier, not a pen I'd come across before.

I've only ever tried out a MB at a pen show - did love the nib on that particular pen. I have looked at the MB Mozart when I've been in Selfridges in Manchester and I've ended up staring longingly at it.

Yard-o-Led, I'm not normally a fan of metal sections, but I could happily make the exception for these pens. I think they're so beautiful. Would I really want to carry something like that around to work all the time though. The daft thing is that I carry more expensive Conway Stewarts around, but somehow a pen like that just seems more expensive.

I've never really taken that much notice of the Targa. I always want to get on with Sheaffer's, but always seem to reach the conclusion that I just don't get on with their nibs as well as I might.

Sailor Chalana, urgh, it just looks way, way too thin.

Filofax loops are usually too big for Chalanas. But sometimes an old (as in English) Filofax loop is too small for a wider old style Chalana.

Wait, how did you have a loop that fit a "51"?

Since the loops are elasticized now, what is the minimum size you need? Then people will have a range between that and Capless Décimo. Just for measurement, compare to wooden pencil and cheapo ballpoint.

Filofax would love to tell you to get a Yard-O-Led.

Sadly these days the pen loops vary from one Filofax to another, even the same model.

My Personal has a Cross 0.9mm pencil 10ct gold (rolled/filled/plated not solid!) and my A5, which lives in the office, has a Cross 0.5mm pencil and a Selectip highlighter - both burgundy coloured. The two loops on my A5 Belmont are different sizes; one holds the thinner pencil snugly and the other the fatter Selectip snugly.

Why use a pencil? Because I frequently have to change appointments and prefer to rub out pencil than rule through pen as that can leave me with insufficient space for the new appointment.

The highlighter is to highlight those things that are 'done' from the 'to do' list - psychologically it works to see more and more yellow on the list!

If I need to use pen (for the addresses section), I use whatever is to hand (FP of course).

I wonder why these companys make their pen loops so small ... mayby they think everyone uses skinny BPs. But even so they mostly don't fit. I have a very nice leather portfolio from the company where I used to work and I never did find a pen to fit the loop.

Do you think it would do any good to complain to the Filofax company?

Montblanc Blue-Black please; shaken, not stirred.

I have a filofax mini and a Pilot Birdie fits perfectly in the pen loop. I know it has no gold nib but Pilots steel nibs are very good. I love mine and its the perfect pen for the filofax. Also its not too heartbreaking if I do lose the pen.

Good Luck with your search.

Wish list: Aurora Optima

Current inked Pens: Pilot Decimo - Noodlers BBH, MB Mozart - MB Lavender

Pelikan M150 - Noodlers Kung te Cheng

A 51 was just perfect for my old Bloomsbury Personal, just the right diameter. I was so disappointed to find a 51 wouldn't fit in my new filofax.

The barrel of a modern CS Dinkie will fit nicely in the loop, so that's the narrowest a pen would want to be.

Not good news that the pen loops vary so much, although I have to admit the two loops on my old one were different sizes. I was already disappointed that I couldn't get a replacement leather filofax with two pen loops, they only come with single loops. The new one might be elasticated in one section, but there's really not a lot of give in it.

I'm with silexinik. The Birdie has a nice nib, and is very comfortable in the hand for such a tiny pen.

Perhaps one of those Jinhao missiles as an alternative?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
