Visconti Bordeaux

Partway through the review I realized the color just didn't seem right. As it turned out, it was the pen chosen. So parts of this sample show what this color might look like with an EF or xxxf type nib or a really dry writer. I did add some notes and text with a dip nib, and you can clearly see the difference between "wet" and "dry" on this color.

Overall, the color behaved like the other Visconti inks I've tried, which is to say it has medium flow (can be dry in dry pens) and has more lubrication than some brands. It will tend to "bead up" on good paper rather than spread or feather.

The color is mostly a red, just a bit on the "dark" side, with plenty of shading characteristics. It is very similar to J. Herbin's Rouge Opera (which I happen to have on hand) although the Rouge Opera has just the barest tinge more maroon/magenta to it. I'd think if you liked one color, you'd probably like the other, the difference being in the "feel" and "lubrication" between the two inks depending on your taste or needs in that area.

Enjoy!

I really enjoy your reviews, too, Pictrix.

My three favorite reds are this one (it comes out very rosy and cheerful from my wetter nibs), Sheaffer Red, and Diamine Monaco Red.

Thank you for contributing so many useful and thorough reviews!

Thanks for your great review. This is one of my favorite inks. I, too, have found that the ink differs greatly depending on the pen used. I particularly like the shading I get with a stub or cursive italic nib and this ink. /Craig

I love this ink. It's one of my favorite reds. I just wish it wasn't so dry. You've got to use it in a wet writing pen in order to see it's full potential.

It's a really nice red. Love your handwriting as well. If it was water-resistant, I would add it to my ink collection.
