Review of Montblanc Thomas Mann Writer's Edition 2009

Great review of a great pen, Shinchan....thanks for putting it together.

I checked out the TM about a month ago while at a MB store. Beautiful pen, that as you say, feels like something put together with high quality and substantial in your hand.

While I admire the design overall and understand why they executed it the way they did, for me the having the lines on the barrel and cap, are almost a bit too much for me. If I were using this pen to write with at meetings at work, I think it would draw too much attention to the pen. So, in that regard, I would have liked to see a version of this design where either

A) The lines are on the barrel and the cap is solid black (or maybe silver) or

B) The lines are on the cap and the barrel is black....

Again, think this is an very handsome, elegant pen, and I'm somewhat tempted to get one, even with having made my comments above..

Anyway, enjoy this wonderful pen!

That's a beautiful pen! I have a question, though, does anyone else feel that its odd Montblanc releases so-called limited editions when the numbers are in the range of 15,000! That seems like regular production to me.

I don't particularly consider these limited editions. I just figure they're pretty pens on sale until they run out and don't make any more.

Those 15 000 pens will be sold out sooner or later.

Yep this has been discusseda lot.

No doubt 15000 pens doesnt sound like a LE pen but it is wether we agree with it or not.

Great review, beautiful pen. Enjoy it.

BTW: Limited Edition is NOT a synonym for "few". It simply means that a decision was made as to how many will be produced; be it 15, 150, 15000 or 15000000.

Montblanc Blue-Black please; shaken, not stirred.

Really great review and photos. Thank you for the time and effort you have put into sharing this lovely pen with us!

I was at the local MB Boutique yesterday and saw the Mann face to face. For me, it's a little small since I am getting used to 149s as the standard but it's a very well made pen.

All you need now are the little black gloves that the boutique employees wear ;)

Nice review, I did not want to read it until I opened my. One of your photo on the end of the pen showed an reflection of "Mont Blanc" on it had puzzled me for a second because my Mann does not have it. But it would have been nice if MB engraved their name on it just like your picture showed.

Great review. I love some of the WEs - especially the proust and shaw. I find some of the others uncomfortable to use and I really want to HOLD this pen before making any decisions. Shame it still isn't out in Australia yet......

Nice "special effect" MB should put that on some of their pens.

A really nice review, and the photos....well everyone said it before me...fantastic! This is the first time I stopped to take a look at the Mann and I like what I saw, and read. Good job on this and thanks.

Great review Shinchan ... and curse you for making me want another exorbitant (at least for me) W.E. Although it's well behind an agatha at the moment. Would be great to see a size comparison on this one too.

This review has forced the Mann into my brain (whereas I had been trying--fairly successfully I might add--to force it out). I keep coming back to look at the photos but I always end up reading the text in full. After getting the chance to see the pen in person at a boutique, I was won over completely. So now I'm waiting for my B-nibbed Mann from FPH. And it is all Shinchan's fault. :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
