ST Dupont Olympio

jar

Recommended Posts

Found some good ST Dupont threads here on the FPN, and will research more.

When I first saw these pens, they generated images of Cigars, Chivas, Black Tie Private Club. Quality. Think Bond, James Bond.

Then I visited the ST Dupont website, deja vu. Casino Royal. Bond and Bogart.

Here we go again.

Thanks Jar, beautiful, fascinating pens.

Ah, cigars...

Glad to see this thread revived. Dupont makes such fine pens there could never be enough said about them. Thanks, Jar, for your very fine review and for all those great pictures so drool worthy! I LOVE my Vertigo Olympio--the smoothness of the nib and that truly satisfying click when the cap fits into place! Now I'm hankering for the Vertigo II.

I am the proud owner of a ST Dupont Vertigo II fountain pen, serial number 389/400, with a M nib. I really like it a lot. Very smooth. Yes, there is that very satisfying click when the cap fits into place. The Chinese lacquer on the pen really is a truly beautiful thing. ST Dupont's attention to details and quality is really bar none.

Here are some photos.

Too funny.

Number 193 actually isn't mine, it belongs to humblescribbler, but it says "Hi" too.

So does 018.

Reviving an old thread here but I got a used Olympio silver barleycorn on this forum's classified and just had to add my happiness in owning this pen! The quality of it is undeniable. It feels so solid and the nib is just a joy to write with. Mine didn't come with a convertor but that is easily remedied.

Neat. Did you get the standard or X-Large version and which nib does it have?

jar, I have the XL. Nib is the 18K Medium. Love it! Converter just arrived today.

I have 3 Lacque de Chine DuPonts: Tortoise, Gold Dust, and black and red marble. They all have stub nibs that have beautiful line variation, are smooth and never skip. They were recommended to me by the "Pen Doc" at Fahrney's because the nibs are rather rigid and I have a heavy hand when I write. I would recommend them without hesitation.

I am the proud owner of an extra large ST Dupont Olympio Opus X pen, serial number 162/400. It really is a beautiful pen, with Chinese lacquer. It is also a very smooth writer. It really is a joy to have, in my small and growing collection of ST Dupont pens. I don't have gorilla hands but I find this XL pen is comfortable and easy to use, mostly because of the smooth nib. I prefer to use the pen unposted.

It has a 18K M nib and is smooth as silk. I have filled it with the Noodler's Old Manhattan black ink. I am a happy ST Dupont pen owner. Here are some photos.

I've just acquired this Olympio Chinese Lacquer, but I'm unsure of which model it is. Would anyone be able to enlighten me?

Also engraved on the side of the clip are the characters "5KOAP19". What would this represent?

Is the color off in your pictures? It should be far more red than shows; more like the pattern seen on the right in this image.

Jar, I did adjust the photos slightly as they were taken on iPhone in inadequate lighting. This might be a bit more accurate, but it still doesn't look as dark as yours, and it's a bit more orangey than the picture of the lighter.

And in crappy indoor lighting...

Neat. Original Vertigo I guess.

I guess the "5KOAP19" on the clip is the ID number? Is that where the serial number is found on your Vertigo?

Serial numbers on the Olympio/Orpheo were on the side of the clip. My Vertigo is locked away right now and I do not have a picture showing the serial number but did find a few pictures showing serial numbers on some of my other ST Duponts.

Jar (and other generous posters),

Your reviews are wonderful and the photos of your and everyone's DuPonts are making me crazy!

I have serious "plume" envy. Before I joined FPN I had already fallen in love with the D Line in blue

and decided to sell my MB 149 ( currently for sale) to help defray the costs of acquisition.

Now that I have been exposed to so many other models I am not so sure, but since I am a novice and cannot

locate some of these models I think my first will be the new D Line.

I had to chuckle when you stated the following - Ah. A Dupont lighter, crystal ashtray, Partagas Maduro, glass of vintage Port. Near heaven. I have a black and gold Lacque de Chine DuPont lighter (circa late 80's) with which I too enjoy a fine cigar with either a vintage porto or XO cognac.

Wonderful Medici and Chairman Amber, Jar. Is the Medici different from the garden varieties in use?

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. Do you mean "Does it feel different than other XL Olympios when being used?" the answer is nope; feels just like an XL Olympio should feel, smooth, easy to control, perfect balance, effortless, as comfortable and those old Top-Siders and washed Oxford shorts.

Here are some pictures of of my Olympio XL in Midnight Blue. I can agree with everything said in this thread. This pen absolutely exceptional. The fine nib is perfect and feels better on paper than any other nib I own. The finish is perfect. I can't find a flaw in the manufacturing. It's things like screwing the section from or into the barrel and capping the pen that have a feel that is unmatched in any of my other pens. The pen even posts exceptionally. It's a deep, perfectly balanced, and even looks nice, unlike many pens that look ridiculous when you post them. I haven't bought a luxury pen since because I'm afraid I'll be let down in comparison to this one.

Pardon my dusty pictures. I just snapped them quickly in the window light with my phone:
