My New Nakaya Neo Standard Has Arrived... Wow!

Thought I might post a picture of my recently arrived Nakaya Neo-Standard as it's a relatively new model from the company. I bought it direct from Nakaya and I must say the process was very straight forward and stress free. As for the pen, well, a full review will follow but suffice to say I'm very happy with it and love this new curvier design. I particularly like the longer section compared to my Piccolo and find it a very comfortable pen to use. It's a little slimmer than the classic and rival Danitrio Takumi but I'd say they both represent a high water mark in the fountain pen designs of their respective companies. Perhaps I'll review them both... watch this space!

Apologies, for some reason the file didn't upload... how frustrating! When I can figure out why it isn't working I'll post the pictures, but for now, I'm stumped.

I am also having problems with uploading pictures on this forum. After the software update for FPN, I could not upload the photos anymore. I used Mac's Safari. It seems the forum's software does not like Safari.

Interesting, I'd assumed it was a problem at my end, but perhaps its an FPN issue. Certainly, prior to the forum update I never had a problem.

I went for the Kuro Tamenuri finish. At the moment it's still very dark (though it's a very warm kind of darkness if you know what I mean) but I realise that over time the red will come through more and more. I also asked Nakaya to add a discrete red Kanji. For me Japanese pens are all about subtlety and understatement and I think this has worked out really well.

That is a beautiful pen!

You can insert the image in the post as an image link from photobucket (see button in the tool panel - shaped like a photo) - then the photos get embedded in the post and people doesn't have to click on the links.

I've posted a couple of pictures on photobucket as I can't upload to this site at the moment:

The 2nd picture is gorgeous! Can you take a side by side of your Nakaya with the Danitrio? I'd like to see the side differences. Thanks!

Thanks Dandelion. Hopefully I've cracked it this time. Picture of the Neo Standard and the Takumi together. Be aware that I took the photo from a slight angle so it doesn't give perfect representation of comparative size, but it should be helpful. I find them both very comfortable to hold.

I think this is a great pen. I love the kuro-tamenuri finish. Because the pen has more edges than the cigar model, there is more opportunity for the lighter lacquer to come through. Could you measure if the section is of similar width as your writers model? Ruud

Beautiful. I assume the Kanji is on the underside of the barrel. That's where they put it on my long piccolo... I wonder why?

Gorgeous! Congratulations on your new pen! It was well worth the wait, wasn't it?

Of course, I'm biased since receiving my own Neo Standard early in the summer. I'm enjoying mine very much, and - wait for it - I have it filled with Baystate Blue. The BSB has been working well, too.

The Neo Standard definitely topped my list for what I wanted in a Nakaya.

It's clearly made of sterner stuff!

It certainly was worth the wait. The whole process of choosing the pen and buying through Nakaya was a pleasurable experience - an overture if you like to actually receiving it. And, having placed my order, it was nice to sit back and enjoy the sense of anticipation, imagining how the pen would look and feel when it finally arrived. But nice though the wait was, receiving the pen was even better - trying it for the first time and realising that not only had I made a good choice, but that I'd got something quite remarkable.

I've spent a lot on Japanese pens this summer: in particular the Danitrio Fellowship Pen and Takumi and now the Nakaya Neo Standard. But in each case I can honestly say that my expectations have been exceeded; there is something really exceptional about all these pens.

Both my Nakayas are filled with MB violet, a lovely colour that really seems to compliment the urushi.

At what point in the laquering process do they add the Kanji?

After the pen is finished. I believe that Nakaya add the name in their factory, not in Wajima where the urushi work is done.

I thought I was 'done' with Nakaya's for now, but then I see this thread  What strikes me most is the shape of these pens--a classic 'Western' fountain pen silhouette in a Nakaya. Very nice!

  • 1 month later...

I have just placed an order for a Neo-Standard in Aka-tamenuri (Reddish-Red)from Nibs.com

I am having a broad nib made into a stub.

Not sure of the wait yet, but no dougt it will add to the eager anticipation I am already feeling
