what pen to get with 100 pound?

pttx

Recommended Posts

I have decided to treat myself with a new pen, however my budget is quite tight at around 100pound. At the moment I'm considering Cross Townsend, Waterman Expert, Parker Sonnet and 100. I would really welcome any other pens in this price range. I don't mind getting any used.

I would like the pen to be medium sized and I dont like a really heavy pen. This pen will be used everyday for school and so the ergonomics is really important.

Sailor Sapporo, Pilot Custom 74, Pelikan M250 (Anna and Martin at www.thewritingdesk.co.uk offer an upgraded M200 with 400k two tone gold nib), Stipula Vedo, Pelikan M215.......

There are a lot more, but these would be my options,

Hope helps and enjoy your buying.

Julio

PS - With a little more savings you may buy two of them

I'd second the Lamy 2000. The Parker 100 is great for the money as well, but I'm not sure if they can still be found for less than a hundred quid.

Wondering if anyone had any experience on Waterman Carene since they seems to be discounted on whsmith.co.uk

A pen is a personal thing. You said you want a medium size pen, and I personally find pens like the Sonnet and Pel M-200 to be quite small, although I do own both. I think the Waterman Expert or Expert II are more medium sized and, for me, nicely comfortable for extended writing. I find the Expert nibs to be smooth and reliable.

The Lamy 2000 is a popular pen here at FPN. It seems to have the size you want. Personally (again) I find the 2000 uncomfortable to hold because of the material - makrelon (sp?) and a metal section. I think you would have to hold one yourself to see if it suits you.

Edited: I find the Carene to be a nice pen with a fairly medium size and weight. I have only one, but it is reliable and a very good writer. I have not used it for really extended writing, so I leave that assessment for others.

Another question, I'm wondering about the size of the Sailor Sapporo. Haven't really seen one in person, I'm not so sure how does the size of it compare to a Sonnet.

Cheers

What about a Lamy studio - which would leave you plenty of money in the bank? Also available from The Writing Desk.

Have you had a look at the reviews forum? The Sailor, Parker, Waterman and Lamy are all written up there. It's no surrogate for trying out the pens, of course, but it might be helpful.

Carenes seem to have a pretty good rep around here, and £90 seems like a very good price for them. From having handled them in stores, I find them on the heavy side, but not unreasonably so.

Wonderful pens, these Carene's. Have acquired about 10 or so of them, different colors and nibs and such. I highly recommend them.

As for Sailor Sapporo, there seems to be a mixed opinion about the nib and so would like more opinion about it.

After having done more research into the pens suggested, I have come down to the Sailor Sapporo. However, due the the mixed opinion about the Sapporo's nib, I am wondering how well it compares to a Phileas, Lamy Safari and Cross ATX since these are some of my regular used pens.

In the days gone by, people believed that if a person touched an object, that object would form a bond with a part of their soul.

Today such a thought seems almost absurd....Until you enter the realm of Montblanc's master craftsmen.

I did manage to find a Rotring 700 for less than a hundred quid, but I suspect that might have been a one off.

The Pilot retractable and Bamboo are both less than a hundred pounds as well, I think.

Wondering if it is worth splashing out for a M600. Would really like to know how it compare to the smaller models is m250 or 400.

Cheers

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
