I.D. My Sheaffer DESK SET - TARGA?

hugh5

Recommended Posts

I recently inherited a NEW old stock - in its ORIGINAL box - SHEAFFER DESK Set. The Black base is 10" x 5". The pen holders are very heavy and well made.

The set has TWO Sheaffer fountain pens - BOTH with white dots - both stamped on the nib - SHEAFFER 14k. SEE photos.

What I would like to know is WHEN this set was mfg approximately? What MODEL these fountain pens are? Targa? Touchdown (T.D.)?

I also noticed a white gummy/sticky residue when I unscrewed the barrel nearest to the nib...what/was this?

THANKS in advance for looking at my SET and I look forward to any/all your comments/answers/information.

Best Regards,

Dan

You should check your attachments as you have all the images repeated.

Well in the original post you have 29 images. Some repeated three times. Perhaps if you look in the html where you inputted the attachment codes you might find the repeats.

The pens are just as identified on the sticker on the bottom of the base: Touchdown Imperials. Definitely not Targas. No Targa ever had a Touchdown filler. Here is an image of a Targa desk pen for reference, as you can see it has the typical Targa cap ornament and cylindrical body. I have both a ballpoint and a pencil but have never seen or heard of a Targa desk fountain pen.

Whoever originally packaged or sold the set was supposed to have checked one of the boxes on the label on the bottom. In your case, you have two Touchdown fountain pens so there are only two possible boxes. Your pens are Imperials, so the proper box that should have been checked is the second box from the bottom:

Bill is right. They are Imperials. Most likely from the 1960's. The Targa was not introduced until the mid 1970's.

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
