Introducing Devcon 60 second epoxy.....

I bought some of this stuff at the local True Value Hardware before the DC pen show, and have used it on a number of occasions since then.

The tensile strength is the same as the 5 minute epoxy, which is about 1250 PSI, obviously less than that of the slower setting 2 ton epoxy.

But when they say 60 seconds, they mean 60 seconds. Not only does it set in 60 seconds, but it cures for use in 15 minutes, and reaches full strength in 1 hour. It's idea for situations where very high strength is not needed, and where you want to complete a repair quickly. One part is blue, the other clear. When fully mixed, the color of the epoxy is clear.

BUT, some warnings. Use it only in situations where you KNOW that you will not have to fuss with aligning pieces, and where you KNOW that you will be able to have the parts together in the very limited time. If not sure, use a slower setting epoxy. The set is startlingly fast! Cleanup of excess epoxy is with denatured alcohol.

:yikes:

I have trouble being sure I have epoxy fully mixed in sixty seconds, never mind in the joint in that time, and I've occasionally wished for longer pot life with the Devcon 2 Ton variety (pot life about 20 minutes at room temperature). Nice to know this stuff is available (I can envision situations where it'd be preferred), but I won't rush out an buy it tonight...

I wish I had had some of that when I was a marine technician.

The island had a 10,000 gallon water tank that regularly sprang pinhole leaks at about chest height. I would patch these live leaks with some two-part plumbing epoxy (slow dry, but would set under water). However, to get it to set while I was pressing against it with my thumb, I would mix in some (10-minute) 'Fast' dry epoxy.

60-second epoxy would have been a dream...

It's amazing how fast 60 seconds can be!

I think when you absolutely positively Have To have "it" Done in 60 seconds, 60 seconds takes 15 LESS seconds to pass.

Alas, I'm sufficiently dextrous that I've achieved such adhesive indignities as gluing myself to a pen blank using relatively slow-setting cyanoacrylate. (This didn't happen while working quietly at home, of course, but while learning with a workshop full of rather more experienced pen-turners. It really was quite hilarious.) With 60-second epoxy, I'd be like a mouse in a glue trap! This is definitely an adhesive for those more expert than I am.

That my friend, is an understatement. But even so, I like it!
