I am looking forward to receiving the Selectip order from Fahrneys here in the U.S. Should be late Sept., is this correct? Where does this fit in terms of girth on the cap & barrel wen measured against the Apogee or Century II? I'm hoping it is lighter in weight and more towards the Apogee as far as gripping section girth. Let me know...I am very curious to receive it. Looks far better than the C Series....a clunker in my opinion.

I love it. It looks excellent. I don't lunge at every newly released pen (partly because new ones seem rare lately), but I can already see getting at least one RB and FP, and then upon realizing I love 'em, probably adding a few extra of each thereafter.

 

This design and shape happens to be very close to the shape I've been hoping one of the pen makers would introduce, and in fact I was hoping it would be Cross. I've wanted a shape/design that tilted ever so slightly toward a more timeless, classic pen shape. This new Affinity shape seems like it would very nicely fulfill that hope. So I, for one, am thrilled; you don't usually see a consumer product so neatly hit the target of your own personal preferences, but that seems like what's happened here. Thanks---once again---to the good folks up at A.T. Cross. This looks like yet another (soon-to-be) beloved Cross pen in my arsenal.

 

May I ask a few questions:

1) I take it this model is very, very new, having been introduced in just the past few days, and in fact only available for order?

2) when will it be available here in the US, through the Cross Web site (as of this morning, at least, 8/20/09, it isn't on Cross.com)?

3) how does the heft of the Affinity compare with some other Cross hardware, namely re: the fact that it's described as being constructed of resin? If it's basically a plastic pen, is it extremely light, or does it contain a brass/metal liner inside the barrel and/or section?

4) can you describe the dimensions? Which Cross models is the Affinity comparable to?

I'm already wondering what subsequent series of this model range might include. But since it's apparently a resin-bodied pen, I can't imagine there's a whole lot more than some spiffed up paint that Cross could do with it. Certainly not like the subsequent versions of the Townsend or Apogee lines.

 

I'd be thrilled to be wrong about that, however. Especially if, after these pens become the hit they're likely to be, Cross then creates versions that have, for example say, the staccato chrome from an earlier and discontinued series of the Apogee, or the radial chrome version of the Verve. And it goes without saying that a classic Medalist series of the Affinity would be fantastic.

Only the broad nibs are sold out the fine and medium nibs are still in stock. simply select the nib size from the drop down

This is great, thank you. I did a moment's worth of, ahem, "field study," and it looks like the Affinity line will be about the size of the ATX re: barrel diameter and closed length. It also appears to be roughly in the ballpark size-wise with the Townsend, but just a bit shorter, and the Apogee. (Can you tell I wound up hauling my Cross hardware to work with me this morning?)

 

Since the construction is largely resin, I hope it isn't too light. One of the things I love most about my Cross pens is their excellent heft, mainly due to their metal construction. But I reckon I need to get a bit better at judging the relative weights of the pens, because off the top of my head I can't quite estimate whether a 1.11oz Affinity rollerball would most compare in weight to an Apogee, an ATX, or maybe the Verve since those usually seemed slightly on the lighter side compared to the Townsend or the Apogee.

 

If it's remotely possible, I'd love to know what the Affinity looks like capped, too.

It looks great, and I also like the fact that it has a screw-on cap. Someone mentioned the family-resemblance to the Solo, and that was my first impression as well. But more beautiful!

 

I had asked my local dealer already, but he was not having them on stock yet. As soon as he has, I will try and most likely buy. The black edition has my fancy now!

Does it use the same nib as the Townsend? I really like the nib but the body's too slim for me, so having it in a wider body would be great.

The nib is the same as C-Series but a steel version, not a 18K

I see that www.cross.com has now put up the same pictures as those on the UK site. But they are the same pictures. I would, like many others here, like to see the fountain pen capped, as well as some closer views of the nib, perhaps pictures of the various parts of the pen as well, (I don't get into stores very often which have fps to handle and try). I see it will use the Cross cartridge and/or optional converter.

 

The limited description needs to be expanded to include weight and size information, (I have read your response to those questions, but not everyone who has interest in a fine fountain pen would have come here to this particular Net Work, or forum or thread to research it). The nib is stainless steel, are the appointments (trim: bands, clip, cap top) also? or are they an alloy of some other metal, (certainly not some plastic compound!!! ) If this line of fountain pen seems to be generating interest in the market will additional nib sizes and types be offered? Are these fp's nibs interchangeable with another Cross line of fp's?

Just my opinion but when I first saw this I said it looks just like the Montblanc Meisterstück version of pens. Looks almost identical with a few changes. Anybody else see this?

I agree with Bipedallou: the web site needs a lot more in the way of details about the pen. Especially photos of it both capped and uncapped. There's no way I would buy a pen without being able to see all of it. Is the barrel elegantly curved? Straight as a stick? A jewel on the end? There's no way to know. If you have any contact with Cross' marketing department, please tell them this.

I have a C-Series Cross pen which I just bought and I love it.....
