What nib suits my handwriting?

Siv

Recommended Posts

I know my handwriting is pretty bad but it is what it is and it has grown with me and I have come to accept and enjoy it.

To my question: So far I have been buying pens with a large variety of nibs. I have not found a particular nib that I like to write with more than another so here are some examples of my writing with a variety of sized nibs both hard and soft and one stub. I have written in different colours so it's easy to tell me which one you prefer and why.

Thanks!

I like the finer nibs better for your writing. It's little easier for me to read. I like that the strokes are more distinct because it shows a little more of your handwriting style.

I do believe a medium nib that is toward the finer side would do you best---your handwriting isn't too big nor too small... A medium or broader nib would make your handwriting look like a big bunch of blocks, if you get what I mean---they sort of "stick" together, while too fine a nib would make your handwriting too spidery.

Sorry if this doesn't really make sense...

The warmth and personality of your handwriting are revealed with greater clarity when you use a finer nib.

I have sloppy writing, especially if I'm in a hurry. A finer nib will tend to "open" up the writing a bit more, leaving more open space and thereby making it usually a bit easier to read. I do this when I have something that needs to be read by someone else. I would say you'd be ok with a medium, but if you're worried it's illegible go to a fine for other people.

Thanks for the comments! I certainly didn't expect anyone to be nice about my handwriting - I'm sure you are all just being polite ;)

My wife prefers the top blue and the black - which coincidentally happen to be my favourite pens. The top blue is the pen I use every day at work. I take notes, write signatures etc with it. The black is a little more of a zen pen (actually they all are as they don't have clips other than the top blue) and while I like to write with it, it doesn't get used as much because it's not as practical as the blue.

Perhaps a nib with a cursive italic or stub on the fine side of medium and adjusted for an ink flow of about 4-5 on a scale of 10.

I like your handwriting. As someone else mentions, it looks personal and not learned. I can read it without difficulty. Of the lines in the first image above, I like one and four best. /Craig

I like your handwriting - it's smooth, easy to read, and confident.

If these samples are the standard common size of your handwriting, then the #2 red sample in the first scan is too broad for the size of your handwriting - the broad nib fills in the loop of the "d" in "handwriting" and merges the arches of the "n" in "nib," "think," and "handwriting."

I prefer a bold confident look to handwriting, and so I like your #4 and #6 samples in the first scan - bold but still resolving each stroke, loop, and arch clearly.

However, if you write mostly math and science - numbers, formulae, superscripts, subscripts - then a much finer nib is better - like the #3 or #5 samples in the first scan.

I like your handwriting, Siv. Personal, readable and nice!. And think that mediums and broads suit it best.

I recommend 4 (green), as that is a very expressive combination of handwriting/nib.

No 3, 5 and 1 can be read best.

No 6 I don't recommend and stay away from no 2 (red). if you keep this size of handwriting. But : no 2 is a nice nib. This could work out very well if you increase the caracter size.

Filling a fountain pen is much more fun than changing a printer cartridge

No comments on your handwriting as of yet. The monitor is a bit small for a good comparison for me. However, thanks for the post. The idea of doing this kind of comparison is one that I had not thought of. It looks as though it might be helpful for me as I try -- endlessly! -- to improve my handwriting.

There will be no crisis this week. My calendar is already full.
