when I was using urushi on some of my pens - I used a Kim wipe, lint free napkin, to wipe on the urushi in very thin thin layers. wipe it on, rub it in, wipe it off. let it cure for a while. repeat. then I would buff with a soft buff on the lathe using a diamond honing compound. it was white. that worked pretty good.

You reply was very useful. Although I could not get good lint free napkins, I guess the trick was to apply very thin layers. Which I managed to do with japanese brushes. and then wiped with soft rice paper. These produced very good result. Thanks!

Cool! Please share some pictures! I traded my urushi off to a friend in LA - it gobbled up too much of my time - and then I'd forget about it and instead of a few days between coats it would be a few weeks! :(

very interesting

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

A superb post with loads of interesting info.

So far, I have been lacquering with sinthetic resin.

I want to give a shot to the tameguri technique; Since is my first test I will apply a base sinthetic lacquer and then several layers of urushi to achieve the effect.

My question is: Any particular brand? what sort of urushi shall I purchase? Ki urushi or Naka Nuri urushi?

Thank you in advance
