I'll take my overpriced and horrible writing Montblancs any day. ;-)

A perfect series of comparisons. A Lamy Safari is an item of stationery like the paper clip. Both are manufactured to rigorous quality standards. Likewise, Lego is one of the highest quality products on the market and worthy of its status. Therefore, Lamy should be honoured to sit in such esteemed company.

Anyway, enough of all this praise for pens both expensive and inexpensive. Let's get back to the pen bashing!

It seems people are coming out with a gun (or bazooka) blazing.:) This thread is serving as a release for built-up pressure in their minds to express their true opinions (instead of sugar-coating them for the sake of politeness).

Nonsense. I think most people here are clever enough to express their true opinions politely. Talking about pens one doesn't like with by "coming out with a gun blazing" may be fun, but it's not particularly accurate or enlightening about the pen. It does tell us something about the person.

At the risk of being run out of town: Lamy Safari.

Yes, but: why? It's a design thing or there is more?

Oh, no, I actually like the lines. I like the colors. I like the price point. (I'd dearly love to have another Savanna Green Apple-logo ballpoint, and if anyone ever sees one, I seriously will buy one or five.)

But their cartridge inks and the nib were the worst of any I've ever tried, and I've tried more than one bomb.

I see. I have >20 Safaris/Al Stars, and I agree that a couple had nib issues. Luckily it's very easy to switch the nibs...

3. ANY PEN THAT SELLS FOR OVER $250 AND HAS A CARTRIDGE-CONVERTER.

Best post in thread! But then again, I think I line in the self filling snobbery army...

Considering the hate rained on the 51, the Lamy pens, and even perhaps the Pilot Capless, i'd say people don't like mid-20th century design.

As the good doctor F used to say, "My Gawd! I've created a...monster!" Such vigorous response!

But an animus against mid-20th C design? I have not heard anyone savage the Schaeffer PFMs, design classics.

I'd be a bit wary of having a go at montblancs on general principles, as they did some wonderful pens back in the day.

No idea, to be honest. It's obviously something that people care deeply about, and I wouldn't want to get involved myself given how downright nasty it can turn.

That is what I was trying to say. Sorry it wasn't clear. I'm not trying to have a go at anybody over this.

I really have put my foot in my mouth on this one, haven't I? I beg your pardon.

I understood perfectly what you were trying to say! No need to apologize.

Thank you.

Even though I have never found a MB I liked, you certainly have your view and have absolutely no reason to apologize.

Please do not listen to me. My opinions do not count

For me,the design on the 51 is OK--nothing that's world-shattering--I just don't

like the tubular nibs(with the exception of the oblique nib). They produce Bic-like

writing,IMHO.

I think the original question was "most overrated pen," not "what pen do you really hate."

Thus, when I get on the forum and read people about having pen-gasms over the 'buttery-smoothness' of their penultimate purchase, I want to know what all the fuss is about. In the case of my examples described above, I've been disappointed. I don't hate mid-Century Modern design. I'm just disappointed with what I purchased. When comparing my pen to others of the same, I realize my disappointment covers the whole brand and not my purchase. Lamy Safaris and Rotring Cores are ugly, mass-produced pens, and not made hand-made by little elves in magical shops. But I don't expect much for $25. They write reasonably well. So how does this translate to "overrated?"

I don't think "overrated" necessarily has to encapsulate any thoughts about price. For example, I dissed Jinhao, and I got my examples for very little. It's really only about how much people rave about them. I may buy something for $20, but even though it's cheap I'll expect a lot if everyone else is falling all over it. Consequently, if my experience is so-so or lousy, I'll think of it as overrated.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
