Platinum 22

Recommended Posts

This morning at a flea market I found a pen labeled Platinum with a 22 on the cap. It's made of plastic or resin or something light. Capped, the pen is reminiscent of a Murex. The feed is transparent, although slightly blue right now from the ink that was sitting in it.

All I found on FPN and via google were a few posts referring to similar pens as having been made in the 70s, but I couldn't even find photos to match this pen to. Does anyone have any more information about it? Is it indeed a Platinum or do I have some cheap plastic knockoff of something or another? I haven't even dipped it yet; gonna go do that right now.

It looks very similar to my Platinum PG-250, down to the transparent feed, though mine's an 18K nib. Might be a later variant from after the Japanese manufacturers' gold content arms race started?

Thanks, Silvermink! You're right, they are almost identical.

I just inked it and it's writing with the equivalent of a western F. Nice, smooth writer. Definitely a keeper. Now I just need to find the right converter for it.

Whoo hoo! Thanks, Stan. I can't believe what good shape it is in seeing as how it was made in the 70s and I found it rattling around in an old case full of junk. There's a tiny mark on the cap, but other than that it looks great.

  • 1 year later...

I have also recently aquired a Platinum 22K with a bunch of other pens would anyone know what this pen would be worth it is in very good condition and has a very fine nib. I'm pretty sure i want to keep it because it is unusual however i may be persuaded to part with it depending on the suspected value.

Appreciate your help with this

A nice pen. I have one with a fine nib, as well as the 18K version in extra fine. Both are a joy.

I believe Platinum's Japanese model number was PK 22 3000. (The 18K version is the PK 18 2500.) It does, indeed, sport a 22K nib from the era when Japanese pen companies were racing to provide the highest gold content nibs.

I believe the 3000 part of the model number refers to Platinum's suggested retail price of 3000 yen. (According to the now defunct Platinum Place web site, Platinum model numbers changed by country depending on the currency in which the pen was priced!)

By the way, I think the kanji on the nib translate to "fine letter." (Don't quote me on that. The first character is a little hard to read from the photo and I only speak about 20 sentences of Japanese!)

And I guess trying to help out with an answer provided just the right dose of good karma. While I was checking my sources, I won an eBay auction! I am now the proud owner of a Sailor Pro Gear with a 21K medium fine Naginata togi nib for a very reasonable price. :cloud9:

  • 6 years later...

I am six and a half years late to this thread, but have to ask what type of cartridge or converter does this pen take?

Thank you.

Writing with pen and ink, is an endeavour both stimulating and cathartic.

As far as I know, Platinum never changed their cartridge design, so any Platinum cart should fit. Can't say what converter, if any, would fit. This is a pocket pen and they often don't fit converters, Pilot's pocket pens could only take the con-20, now all their pens take the new con-40 after a redesign.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
