Two Writing Samples

The ink colors in these photos are not true as they changed when I reduced them. There is a link below each to the original, full-sized scan which appears, on my monitor, to accurately reflect the ink colors.

While I like my writing, it drives me crazy that it's not consistent and even. I keep practicing, but after some initial improvement, progress seems slow.

While I am certainly not an expert, I find it hard not to be impressed with your handwriting. It would not surprise me if a fair number of those who have reviewed your post have wished theirs was as good.

As an aside (I don't want to hijack the thread), when I showed some people in my pen club some of the Diamine Majestic Blue ink, they said it was purple. I did not believe them until I looked at your first full-sized scan.

Thanks, MikeW. Diamine Majestic Blue certainly has a red component. HenryLouis caught it in his second photo here. Looking again, my full-sized scan appears slightly more purple than what's on the page, but not much. I find that paper makes a big difference with this ink. It looks bluest to me on Rhodia, slightly more purple on Clairefontaine, and most purple on the Staples Eco-Friendly bagasse. On the bagasse, the color seems to shift around depending on the light and the angle.

You have very pretty handwriting. I prefer the medium nib writing, it goes well with your handwriting imo. That must be a lovely nib, I don't even know what a cursive italic nib is compared to a regular italic nib. Sorry your teacher was such a pill and felt compelled to give you that stupid criticism. She/he was probably envious.

Thanks for sharing it and keep doing so.

Your welcome.

Your comment about the colour and paper is very insightful - at our pen club meeting, I was using the Diamine Majestic Blue on the Staples bagasse paper!

Is a very nice hand, Wendy, very clear, readable, and classy. Nothing gaudy, but very pleasant to the eye. I agree the M seems to suit it best. As MikeM mentions, inks and paper combo make for intriguing color variations. Thanks for the post, takes some courage to expose one's hand to critics.

there's so much to enjoy in your handwriting..sorry to read you were discouraged by the prescribed method of your school/teacher.

That there are many formal, and Also individual styles that are perfectly acceptable, is one of the great lessons we learn here at FPN! I recall declining to S- once I began to attend a school which used ballpoints, vs the fountain pens my 1st school required.

I esp like your Capital T's & I's..also your lc r's are exacting...mine often look like an i sans dot:(

It's lovely, And readable..

There is one thing with which I beg to differ with your former teacher... only feel I can comment, as I tend to do this myself.. Less words on one line, and words spaced a bit more.. your lines which are written this way stand out, the letters, and words are more even, consistant...the artistic flourishes have room to shine..

hope you don't mind humble commentary from a grasshopper level writer:)

I like your handwriting much! Very personal, yet legible -- my eyes felt happy to read your words.

Wendy, overall your handwriting has a nice style to it, but have two comments for you, FWIW,,,,

1) maybe a bit more breathing room between words might be good, easier on the eyes

2) It seems to me that the location of your letters in the vertical direction on the page are moving up and down across each line. In other words, if you were to draw a line just at the bottom of each letter on one of your lines of writing it would look a shallow wavy 'S' curve line....hope this is clear enough, hard to describe in words...

Wendy :

This is just a comment on your very attractive handwriting, not a criticism.

If you could increase the inter-line spacing so that the ascenders and descenders don't clash, the overall appearance of the page would be considerably enhanced.

Thanks for posting!

Ken
