How disappointing, Iphlyjaii. Even though I have not used this particular store, I know that good stationers are becoming rare; any and every closing is sad. And I agree with you about the article in the NYT — this is a sign of our times, and change is inevitable, but not all change is for the better....

There is evolution and there is devolution.

I would say this is the latter.

The Bic disposable pen and the keyboard, was the beginning of devolution for the quality of handwriting.

Email, text messages, ..etc is the devolution of languages around the globe.

Paperless Post and the like, will lead through and continue to perpetuate the devolution of invitations and the like.

And this message will disappear as whisper under the roaring train of devolution.

Could be worse though, it could be raining.

PS I have actually thought of hoarding my favorite writing paper and stationery in something akin to a fall-out shelter. I am afraid that good paper companies will simply give up for a lack of clientèle.

Fortunately, paper is a simple enough substance it can be made on an amateur basis, or in small volume, and there's little indication cotton and linen clothing will vanish (hence there'll be a source of rags from which to make high quality paper). It'll be expensive that way (a good worker can make wages at around fifty cents per A4 sheet), but it won't vanish any more than ink will. There might, in fact, be a resurgence of handmade paper if/as large companies abandon products suitable for higher class uses (like invitations) -- hopefully trending away from the awful stuff I've seen sold as "artisan made" paper in the past (stuff looks like a kid chewed up a bunch of multicolored wrappers and then flattened the spat-out ball into a sheet -- and assuredly not fountain pen friendly).

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Getting fine stationery has become very difficult over the last decade.

My current solution is to find a printer that specilazes

in small custom lots and layout. I currently use an artist/printer

who specialzes in letter press printing. My cards and

stationery on Arches paper. My jotter cards are on

Excompta bristol precut gridded cards.

The effort to find the craftsman an paper is well worth it

"“We basically digested Crane’s Blue Book of Etiquette and Emily Post,” Ms. Hirschfeld said, for the application that generates wording choices."

Oh, how delightful. How personal.

That reminds me, I have a letter to write.

I love "dead trees"--and cotton. I really love cotton.

Just don't send me any of this "e-stationery" because I may just R.S.V.P with an e-finger.
