Just finished a fill of Noodler's Habannero and I wanted to share my opinions. I've tasted the Habannero ink in the past, and it was hot enough that I went back for another fill about a week ago. The ink hue can be best described as a medium-value, reddish-orange. I felt it was wetter than the Nightshade I reviewed a week or so ago. I would tell you what pen and paper I used to write with it, but I might get in trouble. See the results for yourself on this page of notes to the left.

I was organizing this new notebook I purchased over the interwebs (again, I don't think it would be appreciated if I told you where I got this from). The color flowed vibrantly and did not have excessive feathering or bleed-through, which brings me to the next image .

You would be able to see the bullet points a little bit, but not much else.

I have handled Habannero peppers before while making my patented buffalo wing hot sauce. The color of the pepper does vary in shade, but most I have seen tend to contain much more yellow than the burnt orange that Noodler's chose to name after the pepper. But, I think their goal was to evoke the "spicy" connection between the color and the name rather than the actual color of the pepper. What do you think?

Next fill : Noodler's Baystate Blue. Review to come.

I've seen this ink reviewed before and each time I think "Hmmm, nice bright color and even some nice shading, but would I use it...?".

I haven't seen your Nightshade review yet to my knowledge, may have and just forgot, but now you have me curious to see that one as well.

Having been using Staples Sugarcane bagasse quite a bit lately, I'm feeling the Habanero would probably look great on that paper, since it adds contrast to shading inks and has brown lines instead of blue.

I can't make out your margins where you say to "See the results for yourself on this page of notes to the left" [looks as if the scan cut off the edges].

So I'm only guessing here but from what little I can make out I have a feeling that you're "possibly" using a Levenger True-Writer Starry Night manufactured @ September 2008 and Circa Annotation 1/4 inch Ruled paper.

If that's even half-way close then I don't understand why any of that being mentioned would get you in trouble here and I for one happen to like Levenger products no matter where they come from.

I like Levenger products and don't care who knows it, don't feel like a traitor to anyone or to myself for liking what I can afford and can only afford a few things that I like, that's just the way it is.

There was a time when it was "supposedly" a bad thing to mention you're from Jersey, but guess what, I am from Jersey and don't care who knows it!

;)

Anyway, a nice ink review otherwise, of a very colorful ink that's 100% made in the U.S.A.; I love Noodler's inks!

EDIT: Just looked and found out "why" you say it might be frowned upon by mentioning....

Nevermind; I get it now!

Ding Ding! You are correct! Reason why this is kind of an issue is that I originally posted this review on my company's blog. I work for Goldspot, an online and mail order pen retailer. As you can imagine, it is a conflict of interest when I am writing about one of the products that we sell, but then mentioning another competitor's products (even though I really love using their stuff). I am quite the pen & office supply fiend, and I am always looking to try new products, even if they are from another company.

Thanks for the reply! I will have to put up that Nightshade review now that you asked!

Hehehe, yep, I was a little "slow on the draw", took me a few to figure out the Goldspot connection.

Tell anyone that may have "issue" with mentioning a competitor that if not for this "puzzle" I may not have visited the Goldspot Site.

I now have it Bookmarked and will be sure to check it out in detail.

Definitely looking forward to seeing your Nightshade review, clicked the Link and saw the bottle and samples and like how really, really dark purple it is.

Seeing it is also one of Nathans' "bulletproof" inks too, fairly rare for any purples I've seen [all my purple inks run away from high humidity, I need something more permanent and I do like purple], now I want some!

Thanks for the review. I think I may just ink that up next - it IS summer ya know! Need a nib that'll display it's neat shading hmmm....

@ thoddomas,

By any chance does Goldspot have Caran d'Ache - Storm in stock, and if so can I get it for $15, instead of the suggested MSRP of $19?

Some places I've found that do have it in stock want $20 and I will never pay above MSRP, for anything!

I'd found a place in Texas the also sells this ink, with a sale price of @ $15 at the moment, so I was just wondering if the company[Goldspot] does any price-matching.

You don't seem too found of Nightshade in a F nib, so have you tried the Storm yet and if so what do you thing about it; I was hoping the Storm would do better than Nightshade in my pen/s, as I prefer F to EF+ nibs myself.

Yes, and yes. PM me your order confirmation number if you want to place it through our website and I will apply the discount manually. I did take a look at the Storm Violet to write the envelopes of my wedding invitations last year and I remember it didn't make the cut because it was a very moody-looking purple. (I went with a Noodler's Purple). I only dip tested it, so I wouldn't have anything to say about the flow.

If you end up buying a bottle and trying it out, post a review and let me know what you think.

I'm trying to convince my wife about my getting this ink.

With a discount, I got the approval since she knows how much I love lightning storms and don't much care for the typical "Royal Purple" colors such as Levenger; Amethyst.

She loves the Levenger; Amethyst color, especially when I let her use my hand-ground/smoothed Cursive Italic nib with added super-flex I'd also made out of the nib.

Personally I would prefer a "moody" or a dark purple, similar to MB Violet, one with nice shading from purple to near black as the samples I've seen of Storm, plus I really like the Italian crystal inkwell/bottle of the Caran d'ache Storm.

Some reviews on FPN, like the one done by member ~RaymondvW~ here show Storm as a rather washed-out purple & watered down, not something I'd like at all so maybe that person got a defective bottle [?].

Other reviews like the one done by forum member ~limesally~ back in Dec. 2007 here show a purple to purple-black shading color I would truly like to have and use.

My first bottled ink purchase was PR Tanzanite, while a nice color I wasn't at all thrilled with it and shipped it to a good FPN forum friend to use. He replied back that he loves it, but I did not care for it no matter how hard I'd tried to like it.

As for me writing a review of the Caran d'ache Storm, I'd be most happy to and also give credit to both you for mentioning and reviewing it and give credit to Goldspot for carrying it!

OK, wife just said again she doesn't like the Storm, she knows I do, so given the discount she's given her approval again for me to go ahead and order it.

So what will it take to get you to "manually" enter the discount?

Should I PM you first, or after I place the order?

I don't want to place an online order, then miss you giving me the discount, then having to pay full price when I can buy it for less elsewhere [found a couple of places selling Storm for @ $15, one with free shipping of bottled ink refills].

I'm ready to move forward on this purchase right now if you're around now, just reply that you are here and reedy to help me get this going.

So get back to me ASAP, hopefully tonight, so I can place the order, you apply the discount manually and they can ship it to me right away.

Thanks!

Scott
