Lamy pen for graduation gift.

Well, my safari is out of commision right now, and rather than buy a new one or a new nib which may not fix the problem, I think my mom wants to get me a fountain pen for graduation.

I want a Lamy again because it was my first pen and I know how good it is. The price needs to be around $50-$60, so I was thinking about a studio. My only concern is the weight of the pen. The safari is plastic and it was a very good weight for me. If I move to a metal pen I am worried that it will be too heavy and I won't enjoy writing with it. Keeping this in mind, what would you suggest? If I can't find something I like I'm just getting another safari.

It is heavier but not noticeably so. If you want a light Lamy the 2000 is very light but its about 30$ more than your budget but its a great pen and will last a long time. If you shop around I've seen the 2000 for 89$ on line.

I've fancied a 2000 for a while and I've been thinking maybe a Studio would do, as it's quite a bit cheaper. A few days ago I went to a pen shop and compared them both. In the flesh, the 2000 looks and feels miles nicer. The Studio felt pretty heavy to my uncultured hand.

The low/mid price lamy that stands out for me is the black CP1. It's metal but not heavy (a little heavier than a safari) rock solid and I understand it was designed by the same bloke that designed the 2000.

From personal experience, if you want something that will last a long time, and isn't too much more expensive, then get it!

30% more won't seem like too much when you've been writing with the studio for 5 years and wished you'd gotten the 2000!

I'll take an Aurora, please. Aurora black.

I've got a Safari, Al-Star, Studio, and 2000 and prefer the 2000 above all. The Studio is a nice pen, but it is heavy in the hand and not balanced the best. Good luck deciding and CONGRATULATIONS on your graduation.

The CP1 is nice, It's like the little brother of the 2000.

I've never tried the 2000 , but I got the CP1 and I like it very much, much more than the Studio, actually (which I also got). The black CP1, would be in your price range, whereas the platinum one is more expensive.

I found a german seller at Ebay that has the Lamy's at very decent prices:

The 2000's one of my favorite pens. If you can push that budget a little, by all means, get it.

I'm almost sure the 2000 is the only current Lamy that comes with a different nib than the others, All the others use the same steel or 14k gold nib that is interchangeable. So, as far as I can tell, the 2000 is the only one that will produce significantly different nib feel. For the other pens, the difference is in size and weight.

Help? Why am I buying so many fountain pens?

Speaking as a parent, I settled on LogocX's overview and budget:

" I think my mom wants to get me a fountain pen for graduation."

A son/daughter guessing what presnt his mother will give him for graduation.

"I want a Lamy again because it was my first pen and I know how good it is. The price needs to be around $50-$60, so I was thinking about a studio."

That's a "hard number"...he or she can't stretch someone else's budget, so the Lamy 2000 is probably out: out of range.

So: to LogicX, Congratulations on graduating and on having a considerate parent. If you can get to a "real" store, try holding the Studio. Read the reviews on FPN, which have been favorable. Reviewers notice that it's heavier than the Safari, but not too heavy. I would pick the Studio with the rubberized grip / brushed steel cap.

This is good reasoning and advice. The Studio is a great pen for a student graduating, sturdy, great design. The ss version is specially durable. Modern but classy and very versatile with all the nib possibilities of the Safari. Feels more substantial, serious pen due to its material and weight. It will be withing your budget and will last you a lifetime.

Being the 2000 another amazing pen, gold nibbed, piston filler, top line of Lamy, you could maybe ask your Mom if you can supplement de price difference, is it is the pen you wish to have.

How can you tell? As mentioned above, trying it. Nothing substitutes the test of feeling a pen in your hand and writing with it. Both pens will be very good ones to have and cherish as a present from your mother in one of life's milestones. Congratulations to both.

Although some find the studio rather heavy. If you like the Safari, consider the Logo, with or without brushed steel--the latter being a bit smarter.
