400 Tortoise Brown Limited Edition

Demonstrative Pen Collector

Recommended Posts

Hello Pelikan fans!

I just received my brown & tortoise striped LE Pelikan fountain pen from the Fountain Pen Hospital (NYC) and the box is marked M401. The nib is single-tone 14C with one chick. I mentioned this in another thread.

I must say I think this pen is much prettier than the similar model from the 1990s--or the one shown from a store in Germany which sold a version last year. The striations on the M401 are much nicer than my tortoise M400, and I think think the single-tone nib suits the aestetics of this new model.

Regards, Robert

No matter where you go, there you are.

Will this end? M400, M415, M401, single tone nib, double tone nib, sold in US but not in EU... I think Pelikan with this model made a large number of communication mistakes...

OTOH, I'd been trying to buy a vintage tortoise here or from ebay without success. Now, for a reasonable amount, I can acquire and use the pen I wanted. That's good.

Daeng, what is a M200 levenger or non-levenger tortoise? Is it something made by Pelikan and modified by Levenger? How they differ?

Thank you in advance.

Andre, from what I read in this forum, it was the Levenger whom commissioned the M200 tortoise at that time (similarly like galeria Kaufhof whom commissioned the M400 tortoise with double ring at the blind cap). The levenger tortoise pen is the same pen as M250 old style pen and the only difference it has an extra ring at the blind cap (same size like the M600 old style ring). The non-levenger pen is the normal issued M200 pen by Pelikan. Both pens have the brown dark cap and section and blind cap. Without anyone of it, it can be considered as a frankenpen.

Thank you, very informative and useful. Do you happen to know when the two where released? Mid-90s?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Andre, I'm not sure when these pens were released but perhaps during the years when the old style dome cap was still in production (before 1997/8). I may be wrong as one of our fellow FPNer - saint simon pointed out earlier in other topic that galeria kaufhof did commission an M400 but with dome cap..

Well, I found it weird that G-K sold two clearly different pens within a short time in 2006/2007 with identical model numbers (M400). I don't know if G-K actually commissions something or rather acts as a kind of outlet store. They seem to have close relations with Pel, as there's no other store in Germany I know of that has exclusive Pelikans. These pens are never announced by Pelikan or catalogued on their website. They just show up.

I received mine from Pam Braun today. The box is marked M415. Nib is single tone wtih one chick.

Edited to add: Silk-screened logo on cap.

It's very chocolatey in color. Not as sweet as my 1950's tortoise but lovely all the same. Smooth fine nib!

Cheers,

Julie

I am not familiar about the history on the tortoise color scheme by Pelikan. But, that "limited" edition brown tortoise looks nice and is different from the regular production models (black, red, green, blue). I just place an order for one through Richard Binder. I was thinking about getting a blue 600. But, the brown tortoise 400 is produced during a limited production run; so, I decided to pick this one. I can get a 600 anytime as it is made on the regular production line.

This has always been my favorite color of theirs with blue second and green a distant third. It's a beautiful pen. I wish I was in a position to get one.

Mine arrived today from Richard. The excellent photos above don't do it justice! Lovely variations in the tortoise and the chocolate top and bottom are wonderful. Can't wait to ink it.

Mine arrive today also. It has an EF nib. I expected an F nib ground to EF and was pleasantly surprised. I hear there are not many of EF's being made.

Mine arrived today and although the pen is beautiful, the F nib is rather scratchy. A real downer given how much I looked forward to the pen. :(
