400 Tortoise Brown Limited Edition

Demonstrative Pen Collector

Recommended Posts

The photo on the Fahrneys cover appears to be an old style M600 with a 14C nib.

Hmmmmm :headsmack:

This is a really almost "must have". If it was a 600 I might stretch plastic in order to obtain one!

Bottom is a Levenger special.

Original M400 body with a 200/250 cap.

Kind of a Frankenpen. Half old-style, half new-style.

This seems to be the third iteration of a LE brown tortoise "M400" within the last three to four years. In 2006, Galeria-Kaufhof sold a real all new style brown tortoise M400 FP/BP set (2 trim rings on piston knob), then a fully old style brown tortoise set (old style cap, no trim rings), which was also called M400. Now we have frankenpen M400.

Exactly. Here are the two G-K LE's.

It may be the same design as the Levenger version; however, I purchased the above pen one year ago at the Kaufhof Galeria store in Hannover, Germany. I bought several sets, FP/BP and FP/MP. Here is the label from one of the boxes:

Here are the caps:

And here is a photo of it posted. The top pen is the M400 Kaufhof Galeria version that Rick Propas was selling last year. The nibs are the ones that came with the pens.

I cancelled my order with Joon today. I have zero balance on my credit cards and expected to pay off this before any interest was due but I got a medical bill that insurance did not cover and my truck unexpectedly needed new brake pads and rotors. I felt it would be irresponsible of me to pay for some and carry a balance on the rest. Since they had not shipped the pen yet, I will wait a few months before I think about re ordering. If they had not been out of stock, I'd have the pen on the way and deal with it, but now I can deal with it later or not at all.

hang in there Artie .... 6 months from now you'll be writing with your new tortoise brown thinking about the journey you'll have taken to get one. In the end I think this edition of the M400 will sell well, but retailers like JOON will still have them available for some time to come.

Take care,

Jason

Can anyone tell us what the cap top logo looks like on this new "400"? I'm hoping it is engraved but I'm thinking it is the silkscreened bird.

Is there someone out there who has gotten one yet?

Thanks! --Doug

Lovely looking pen. Love the understated elegance. Wish it was a monotone nib, though

As far as I can tell, it is a monotone nib. If you look at the Fahrney's and others websites, the nib shows a light reflection, as far as I can tell, it's not a two-tone nib.

I'm waiting for mine from Pam Braun's - who BTW has the best price on the pen as far as I can tell.

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "F" nib running Birmingham Firebox

Sailor Princess Kayuga "MF" nib running Noodler's Black Swans in Australian Roses

Delta Reservoir "EF" nib running Colorverse Mariner

Opus 88 Minty Year of the Snake "F" niub running Birmingham Sugar Kelp

Just received my tortoise 400. Haven't even had time to ink it yet but top Pelikan logo is same as my other two, a blue striated 400 and a marbled 200. Opened box a few moments ago, no special engraving on top.

Bought from Swisher's. Checked nib to insure that I received M as needed and my nib is all gold toned, not two tone.

Thank you ShadowWriter for explaining the captop for us. I had not seen any photos of that part of the pen and was curious.

I'm happy Pelikan decided to make this model available for everyone!

I am sorry. It is not for lack of trying that I haven't posted images. I just purchased a new computer, now need a new camera. I couldn't get a decent image of the pen. I even tried scanning but it did not do justice to any 3D attempts to show the pen.

It is hard to describe the beauty of it because tho' it is striated like a regular 400 (I have a blue 400), the body is more of a combination of tortoise, and pearl-like gold. It has "gleem and class" of a black tie affair without being "over the top". Or is that "gleam"? Well, just a really nice looking pen.

I usually prefer silver but when posted, the gold Pelikan logo with the gold trim on tortoise/gold body w/gold nib is perfectly consistent in appearance (at least for my taste). Engraved would be *very* nice, DougS.

I know there is talk about it not having the double ring but I almost feel that if it did, it may have had a bit too much gold trim. I doubt that was the original reason but as is, it seems just right and of course, once posted, the double ring wouldn't show.

This has been one of the few pens of any brand that I feel looks better in person than in any online seller's picture. Of course, everyone is different and has different expectations.

I need to take time now to ink it tho'. What good is a pretty pen with a nib problem? I must check it and make sure it writes well!!

:headsmack:

Again, sorry no pics, GP!

You are more than welcome, DougS. As you can read from my post a few moments ago, I regret that I wasn't able to post any pics.

I happen to have a bottle of Pelikan Brilliant Brown ink. Is it mandated that I must ink a tortoise Pelikan with brown ink? Seems appropriate.

Hi ShadowWriter, maybe it's covered already, but is the cap dark brown or black? Thanks.

No problem to me if asked/answered because I began answering before reading and checking to see if anyone already had covered it all.

Black brown. Very dark. Put with other Pelikans, it doesn't stand out as a different color. Yet under bright light, you can discern a slight and I do mean slight brownish hue. If seen by itself, it appears black. Against jet black, it is a half hue lighter. If anyone here has a true brown, I must have gotten a fake.

I've replied to your question, but wanted to add to my answer. When I said black brown... if you look at the original post on this topic, post #1, the pic is exactly (at least on my monitor) how the pen looks. Mine looks black. It's as if they just dribbled a tad of brown in the manufacturing mix, as an 'ever so slight' compliment to the tortoise and gold, rather than trying to create a totally different pen (inconsistent with the appearance of the other striated pens in the series).

Have I muddled your mind completely, now?

Yeah, muddled. I am trying to see if this is one difference from previous tortoise, but then I have no clear idea of cap color previously. In some posts, it was mentioned that Levenger sold one once with 250 cap a while ago ? And I was wondering if this pen is with stock cap, or if they made one just for this pen(cause then it would be more special...). Trying to gather more info before pulling the trigger...

Does anybody know how long this one will be produced?

btw. My pelikan 400 brown Tortoise's cap is really brown. If you hold it next to another (standard) pelikan you can easily tell its brown. But that is maybe because its old (50 - 60 years)

Its great that this one has a single tone nib and no double ring at the piston knob.

Somehow I prefer the white tortoise/honey.

I find the brown tortoise a bit too dull for me.

Was playing with one white tortoise at a shop yesterday. The colour of the barrel is really striking.

Too bad the price at that shop is a bit too steep for me but I know of somewhere that I can get a good price.

Now I'm really tempted to get one before they all disappear.

well as I reported earlier, I ordered one, then cancelled the order due to other unexpected expenses that arose. In the meantime I found a stimulus check had been deposited in my account (!) and went back to Joon to re-order. They are no longer offering the pen with an XF nib so I looked at Binder's site. He has the pen, will outfit it with an XF nib (for an extra amount) and ship it for a total price that is lower than I expected.

The picture he has on his site clearly show a monotone nib. Joon and Fahrneys, I am pretty certain, show it with a two tone nib) A monotone gold nib is more in keeping with the aesthetics of this pen, in my humble opinion.

Whoever was telling us about your new tortoise, are you in the US? None of the sellers I have come across have this pen in stock yet.

I also have the white tortoise but it is so pretty, I can't bring myself to ink it. I don't think I will have the same problem with this one.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
