Deco look

One of my favorite pen designs for its "look" is the Waterman Ink-Vue Silver Ray. Similarly, I like the Chrysler Building in New York City or the interiors of the Empire State Building.

Which other pens have such an appearance?

My personal favourites are the 1920s Art Deco Wahl pens, as shown here.

Talking about fountain pens is like dancing about architecture.

Do you own one Fred? I have one that I won on fleabay 3 years back in near-mint condition and it

has a wonderfully flexible nib.

It's in my rotation, being used right now, filled with PR Sonic Blue.

I'm not sure about pens that resemble the Empire State Building, but Cross and Conway Stewart both make pens with an Art Deco design. I've always considered the humble Waterman Phileas to have something of an Art Deco design as well. I love this style/era so I'm always on the lookout for pens with this attribute.

The Eversharp Coronet certainly has some design elements shared with the Chrysler building. Other Classic Art Deco pens are the Eversharp Doric and the Waterman Patrician.

The Eversharp Coronet...

Thank you, Artie!

Oh no, not another pen hunt, a full length Rhodium Coronet. <sob>

I know it's been mentioned here already, but the Eversharp Doric is the epitome of art deco fountain pen design. Not to mention, the ones with adjustable nibs are a lot of fun.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

Fred ...know exactly what you are talking about.

The Chrysler Building

David Broadwell was commissioned to create a fountain pen that commemorated the famous Chrysler Building in New York City, with a specific desire for a short bodied long capped configuration. Along the way the collector asked for a small folding knife to accompany the pen. Aside from these generalities, the maker was given a great deal of creative freedom. Broadwell chose the building's tower with it's stepped arches for the pen's cap and "Mercury's Helmet" ornamentation and hub cap brick work on the 31st floor (shown in the photo below) for the knife's handle. Stainless steel was chosen for the major materials, with black acrylic used for the pen's long section.

This is another example of what can be done when Broadwell is given a theme to work in, one that gives pleasure to both the owner and the creator.

An Eversharp Skyline is about as Art Deco as it gets, not exactly Chrysler Building, but evokes all that is art deco (at least with respect to industrialization . . .). My thoughts.

+1 on the Eversharp Skyline

The Waterman Edson series (particularly the Edson Black Diamond) also has a Deco look.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thank you all. I succumbed to a Coronet, plus I found a Montblanc 344 Silver Ray.

Although nib performance rules, I guess my little collection will go deco, too.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
