Flourished italic

After doing some practice with formal italic, I decided I needed some 'play' time and grabbed the back of an envelope. This is the result of a few moments of wild flourishing, but I thought it looked better than I expected, so decided to show it. It was done with Pelikan fountain pen that has an italic nib - a pen I bought by mail from the USA.

There is an immediacy about this which is very attractive. Nice, even lettering and strong, off-the-cuff flourishing written at a steady pace - a sure sign of confidence!

Thanks for posting.

Beautiful flow...

The great thing with human brains is they're fanless, nice and quiet, although I'm sure mine whistles a bit sometimes...

Thanks for posting the results of your "play"! There IS a playful motion to the appearance -- how much do you plan out first and how much happens on the fly? How improvisational are you when creating something like this? Just wondering...

Thanks, Doug. This piece really was off the cuff - I wanted a break from writing out endless practice letters and adhering to 'the rules'. There was an A5 envelope on the table that had come in the post that morning and it had an expanse of white space that I thought shouldn't be wasted. I wrote the word 'Calligraphy' with a mild flourish (and later cropped it out of the image), decided I could flourish it a bit more and just went for it. I had no idea at the time of doing anything with it - it was just a bit of letting off steam! So there was no plan, no layout, no guidelines and not even any idea of what words I'd be writing. Indeed, if you look at the piece, you'll see that I added the words 'such...Operina' as an afterthought, just to continue using up the paper - it's pretty poor English, as it stands!

I often think I write better when I forget about the rules, but I practise the correct letter shapes in the hope that a bit of muscle-memory will help when I let rip. At my age, I need all the help I can get! :)

That certainly seems to be the case here, with plenty of muscle memory for the forms and shapes but clearly not something from a copybook. I like it!

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.
