Noodler's Blue or Ottoman Azure?

katia

Recommended Posts

Hello -

I don't own any Noodler's inks and am considering getting a bright, saturated mediumish blue.... ideally without purple or green tint (I know this is everyone's dream :))

After looking through all the comparison scans (I found 27 Noodler's blues!!!) , I can't seem to tell the difference between the Blue and the Ottoman Azure.... can anyone help?

As a point of reference, I am hoping for an ink not as purple as PR Lake Placid or Waterman Florida Blue, but not greenish like PR Naples Blue. Something lighter than DC Supershow Blue and darker than Diamine Mediterranean Blue would be ideal.

Thanks! katia

Ottoman Azure is pretty, but not what I'd call a true blue. I haven't tried it, but have you considered the Polar version of blue? I thought that was a bright blue, same as I thought standard Blue was also one. Since I don't care for that color (think Diamine Royal Blue), haven't looked into it more.

I'd call Ottoman a cerulian blue as well, meaning a slight greenish leaning. Adding a slight bit of red will neutralize the green, and darken just a bit, before taking it to purple.

Thanks for the scan! The color I am looking for is not unlike that 2nd color in your scan.

Currently, I achieve it by mixing 5 PR Tropical Blue : 1 PR Midnight Blues... I would like to try some Noodler's ink though...

How far does the Noodler's Blue lean toward the green side....just a tiny little bit?

Or perhaps someone can recommend another non-blue, non-green Noodler's medium blue with good lubricating properties - I figure with 27+ blues, something's gotta fit the bill :P

I think Ottoman Azure fits the bill. To my eyes on white paper (Apica, Clairefontaine, Field Notes, and my Rhodia Meeting book... I use all at work) under fluorescent lights at work, it looks like a true, bright, saturated almost cobalt blue, with no tones of purple and absolutely no tones of green. On my monitor here at home, it looks almost exactly like the 2nd line in that scan above, and also exhibits similar shading characteristics.

Obviously, YMMV, but Ottoman Azure is my daily go to ink right now and one of my favorites... and I was looking for what you were looking for, it sounds like.

Both could be right for you. I have Eel Blue (which I believe is very similar in color to the Standard Blue) and Ottoman Azure and love both. The Ottoman Azure is the darker of the two: from a wet nib it's not that much lighter than DC Supershow Blue although a bit more towards the cyan than DCSS. So If you want BRIGHT, the Standard Blue or Eel (perhaps even brighter?) Blue would probably be more to taste, as long as they are not too cyan for you.

I think Noodler's Blue would fit the bill for you. Ottoman Blue is very dark and verges on blue-black IMO.

Amazing how the same ink can look so different for so many people. Mine's not very dark at all. It's a lovely brilliant cobalt blue with no hints of blueblack or green. :) It's been pretty consistent across papers for me though, from my Apica Winlex to my Rhodia meeting notebook to the Field Notes to the new maruman spiral notebook I just got.

Hello -

Diamine Royal blue could be your answer - similar to the second ink on the scan later in this thread.

Just a thought

Ottoman Azure is one of my most favorite blues...that and the Navajoe Turqouise.

The Azure does have a very deep cobalt look to it.

Favorite Pens...Pelikan M7000 Majesties (have 6) and Waterman Leman 100's Old Style All Silver (have 4).

Favorite Inks: Noodlers...Love Ottoman Azure and Ottoman Rose.

Favorite Paper: Beckett Expression Super Smooth in 24 lb. Writing and 70 lb. Text weight.

I, too, was looking for a clear blue and considered both the Ottoman Azure and standard Blue. I went with the Blue and I should be getting it in the mail shortly, so I'll be able to add my opinion soon. I thought the Ottoman Azure looked a bit darker than the Blue. I believe all the differences in preference are to do with the wide variation in pens and papers. Good luck with your decision ^_^

I find that Noodler's "standard" blue is not exactly blue, not to my mind, which says, "not blue, not blue!" My eyes say, "more! more" .

There is some magnetic element in Noodler's Blue.

(Ottoman Azure doesn't have the same pull.)

I would put Diamine Florida Blue (previously Torpical Blue) closer to the scan than their Royal. However, it is a bit lighter than what I was after, but might be perfect for the OP.

I got the Noodlers Blue yesterday and I'm delighted with it. What I've noticed is that it's almost hinting at turquoise but not enough to put me off (I don't like turquoise for some reason). It's bright and refreshing.

I noticed it is difficult to come off Ottoman Azure's ink on my hands. I don't have this issue with Aurora Blue.

These descriptions don't ring a bell here. I had a bottle when it first came out, in 2004. It was the color of Elvis-style blue suede shoes, like these. Has it changed, I wonder?

No. I think we all just have different eyes. I have three bottles of Ottoman Azure which I've purchased at different times over the last 1.5 - 2 years, and they're all the same color to me... vivid cobalt blue. Not even like the blue suede shoes... more like the laces. Blue black? Not on your life. Teal? Heck no.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
