Waterman Expert with "L" nib

Rique

Recommended Posts

I´ve just found a Waterman Expert at ebay, with a nib engraved L instead of M or F. The vendor says it is a broad, and it does look like one. Does anyone know what this L might mean?

regards,

Rique

Rique, I am not completely sure but I recall that sometime during the 1990's one or more European pen manufacturers had the bright idea to change the nomenclature for pen sizes. They began by substituting "L" (I presume meaning "large") for "B." It turned out that the standard pen size indicators are so conservative and aculturated that the experiment was dead in the water before it got started. I think I have seen exactly one nib on one occasion that had the "L."

Hence, I will suggest that the pen you have is a slice of history that will never come again. Keep hold of that nib, even if you get another nib mounted for writing enjoyment.

I hope this info helps.

Thanks a lot, FrankB! I was thinking, maybe this L is supposed to mean something in French (since the pen is made in France), but I couldn´t come up with a suitable word beginning with an L... :D

So could this mean the "XS" on the Rotring Core means eXtremely Small? I also note that it has l, s, and m at the top of the barrel in little hexagons.

YMMV

Wait a minute, what color is your Core? I think the letters in the hexagons may be the color (i.e. Lysium)

I think XS is fine. :D

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
