Hi,

Usually, spray silicone includes petrolatum, so I don't recommend it. I recommend silicone grease which you can find in diving shops. A high grade is also used to seal ground glass joints on lab glassware.

I don't think you need a food grade silicon lube. Why not use the stuff at the auto parts store? It's a lot cheaper.

I actually found pure silicone grease in an Ace Hardware in the plumbing section. A small tube will last a while.

We are talking of silicone, not silicon, right? Or am I totally wrong?

I'd recommend that you use only silicone grease from a diving shop. It may cost a tad more, but the silicon grease found at home improvement shops, plumbing supply shops, etc contain impurities that Could harm your pen.

I have no access to diving shops or anywhere else that I imagine would have "food grade", so I'm taking what I calculate to be a very small risk with the pure silicone grease I found at Lowe's in the plumbing section. I think it may last me a lifetime if I restrict it to use in eyedroppers and piston fillers.

You'll be okay with the pure silicone from the hardware store. Spray stuff is too thin. You want some substance here to seal up an ED pen to avoid leaks, which is exactly what the stuff from the hardware store is meant to do. I'd look at it carefully to make sure it didn't have petroleum products in in. Otherwise there are several resources for the stuff online.

SILICON - Not to be confused with "silicone," silicon is the main component of computer chips. It is an element commonly associated with glass. It is called silica when bonded with oxygen. Sand and quartz is a form of silica.

SILICONES are largely inert, man-made compounds with a wide variety of forms and uses. Typically heat-resistant, nonstick, and rubberlike, they are commonly used in cookware, medical applications, sealants, adhesives, lubricants, and insulation.

Two different things not just spelling issue

The element Silicon (in the computer chips) is the same stuff which forms the back bone for Silicones(Polymers) also. You can find more info here: http://www.dowcorning.com/content/sitech/s...s/silicones.asp

Hi Dev, I use Dow corning High Vacuum Silicone grease (NLGI-2), which is available in a 100gm tube for about 300Rs in India. It is a commonly available product, India is a major exporter of Silicone based products, you should be able to find it in any decent hardware supplies shop, try karol Bagh area in Delhi.

Other brands available are Metroark(Kolkata), Anabond(Tamilnadu), Mosil(Mumbai) etc.

Best,

Hari

I've been using silicone grease from the plumbing section of my local hardware store for two years now. I made sure to get tubs that do not have petroleum additives. And I've had experience with the Dow corning high vacuum grease and it's good stuff. If I wasn't so ethical, I'd steal a tube from my lab and use that instead.
