Pelikan Rollerball Refills -- any equivalents?

Does anyone know of any non-Pelikan gel rollerball refills that fit the Soveran line? The Pelikan 338 is their refill, but it dries up very quickly.

Thanks. The thread suggests only that one alternative, which I don't want -- the Pilot Q7 tip is too fine. The thread confirms that the G2 won't fit because the collar on the body is too wide. There are also Monteverde refills marked for Pelikan but they're the "universal" type which may not really fit the Souveran line of Pelikans, which use the 338 refill.

Hi JML.

As my earlier post stated, just a wee bit of trimming will produce a very servicable refill.

Just start at the point end and gingerly bring the razor blade back toward yourself carefully. It thins out the plastic enabling the point to protrude.

It is a great alternative to the propriatory(and quick dry out Pelikan refill).

My wife jokes about how tight I am, but it's really about just a little work to obtain a much better refill.

Give it a try!

I've been looking for a suitable alternative myself.

I have found that the Itoya rollerball refill (package is marked both NPR-5BP and NPR-5BU) fits. It is, however, a 0.5mm Fine.

Keep searching...

Schmidt makes a refill for the Pelikan (see Yafa Outlet website), but I haven't tried one yet. I can use Pelikan refills in my Caran d'Ache rollerball, so I imagine they'd be interchangeable. Caran d'Ache makes a felt tip refill too if you get tired of gel refills.

Hi JML.

I found one method to use a Pilot G2 refill without trimming it down(which I did a few times before) and still use the 338 if I later sell or give the pen away.

I used a small round tapering file with fine teeth to slowly remove enough metal in the tip of the barrel to allow the shoulder of the G2 refill to fit. I found that I didn't need to worry about the length of the G2, since it was a little shorter than the 338.

I used a drill, in reverse otherwise it seems to catch and not spin, with the file and start spinning slowly, test fitting every couple of seconds. I did this mod to four Peilikans, one for each color, green stripe for green G2......... I forgot where I bought this small file, which had a round, square and triangular files, but must ahve been from some hobby shop (or maybe Amazon). Hope this helps.

I just did the file method, though I did it manually, to avoid taking away too much material. Worked perfectly. I think the G2 roller refill (especially the 0.7 mm size) runs circles around the Pelikan refill, which is much pricier, btw. Thanks for this tip. Otherwise, my Pelikan RBs would have continued to gather dust.

I'm using Schmidt rollerball refills in my Cartier RB. They seem to write quite well and last a reasonably long time. I bought 3 of these for less than I'd have paid for one Cartier one, and they look like they're identical.

I don't know what size the Pelikan pens take, nor if there's an equivalent from Schmidt, but I'd say it's worth looking into. (I've used Schmidt ballpoint refills too, and they are also quite good.)

Are most of these refill replacements for the R800, R600, or other? I have a couple of R800 series rollerballs and I'm happy with the blue F on one but very unhappy with the M black on another. It behaves more like a cheap BP pen, actually, and skips a lot. Any $0.50 rollerball from an office supply store easily outperforms it, and this shouldn't be the case for a $175 pen. (I can't stress that enough!) With that being said, I'm very open to learn about refills that will fit my R800 without modifying the pen.

I have ordered a fibre tip refill and will post again when I get it! My 400 rollerball hasnt seen much use, I hope this will work :eureka:

I made a post on this topic a bit back. No drilling, trimming, or other alteration required for the refill to fit, and generally available.

I recieved my Caran d'Ache fibre tip refill a few days ago. It fits very well, just had to use an emery board to lightly sand the bottom ring of plastic on the refill, then it takes some pressing with the eraser end of a pencil to get the front support collar to extend out just enough. It took two minutes tops.

It writes very well and no sign of drying out. There is a small cone in the cap of my M400 and I am hopefull it will keep the tip from drying up. I grew up with "flair" pens and I like it better than a rollerball.

I bought it from Joseph at Passion4pens.(#289-1938) I chose the medium /black refill. They come in fine as well but I can't tell you if they have the same front collar or not. Many thanks to Sharkle for posting about it.

The expensive Pelikan 338 refills are not to fraud-proof, and dry

out after a couple months, so was also looking for an alternate.

I tried this years ago without much success. But have used a

Uniball Signo 207 with the .07 (medium point) black for checks,

etc. that require fraud-proof ink. (refill aprox. $1.50 ea.)

Today, tried the 207 refill, and it's the exact same dimensions

except that the white collar near the tip needs some sanding

down about 1/8th inch upward. A few thousandths of an inch

off of that area, and it fits perfectly without any pen modification.

Have you tried the Monteverde gel ink refill made for Pelikan rollerball pens? You will find it on page 12 of the Monteverde catalog, http://www.monteverd...e_refills.html.

I have found this refill to be smooth like all the Monteverde gel ink refills. This refill comes in a medium and a broad point size; I use the broad refill. Using the broad Monteverde refill made for Pelikan rollerball pens has made me enjoy using my Pelikan rollerball pens. I have never been fond of the Pelikan refill -- nice color but very scratchy. So, now I have a nice color refill for my Pelikan rollerball pens that is not scratchy.

I don't know if this reply is appropriate here or not. If it is not, please someone advise me what to do. -- Perhaps I need to present this question for the first time?

My question is there a Master list of Rollerball generic refills that fit the major brands? i.e. Lamy, Parker, Cross, Waterman, Monteverde, Pelikan and many other major brands? Thank you in advance

I took a whole different approach. You can carefully pull the metal tip/feed out of the cartridge with a pair of needle nose pliers. Then using a long needle syringe fill the cartridge with your favorite ink and insert the tip (including the attached feed) back into the tube. Voila. Now you have a refill with your favorite ink. So far I've only used comparable color inks. e.g., used blue ink in a blue 338, but I'm sure a different color will work but will take some time to run the old ink through the felt feed.

Thank you for this! What a simple yet effective solution to a vexing problem. I just refilled my 338 Medium Blue with Aurora blue and it writes better than when new. Thanks again for this easy, money-saving tip.

June 2016 Update:

Try "coloradopen.com" for the:

1) Monteverde Wide Writer Rollerball Refill - Blue or Black, which will fit perfectly for the Pelikan 338.

In addition, try "yafaoutlet.com" (Los Angeles area) for these Rollerball Refills that will fit perfectly as a substitute for the Pelikan 338:

1) Schmidt 5888 (Metal Tube) Ceramic Rollerball Refill (Fine, Medium, Broad) 2-Pak $11.00

2) Schmidt 888 (Plastic Tube... same exact refill as above) Safety Ceramic Rollerball Refill

(Fine, Medium, Broad) 2-Pak $7.00

3) Schmidt 5285 Rolling Needlepoint (Extra-Fine) Metal Tube 2-Pak $11.00

.... I've used them all in my Pelikan R800 Rollerball Pen and they all fit without having to do any modifications. Truly Wonderful!
