Aurora black and Herbin's Perle Noir are in constant ifhgt to see which one gets used...and I keep them both. Very nice black. I happen to like wet inks, so is just right for me.

How does Perle Noir's drying time compares to Aurora's?

I love Aurora black for its flow and darkness, but would like to use a faster drying ink.

Dries faster and is not so wet. Is my reference black and also very resistant to water and UV light. I get my Herbin inks form www.penandco.com . They ship for free worldwide if you order at least 3 bottles. My problem is I always want more then 3.....

Thank you for the answer. I'll give Perle Noire a try.

I really like this black too. My only complaints are the slow drying time (the fact that it is a wet ink doesn't help) and poor water resistance. Noodler's Old Manhattan does not have these 2 problems, but the nib creep is very unsightly.

I like Aurora Black too. My only wish is that the PH was closer to 7.0 than it is. I know, I know that the Noodlers inks are all PH neutral, but there is something that makes me reluctant to fill my pens with any of them. I'm not the only one. Many of the older pen folks that I know have not used Noodlers either. My "reference" black used to be Rotring Dakota Black with a PH of 7.0 along with excellent water and sun resistance (per Greg Clark's book). Alas, it is long gone and the closest I've found so far to its properties is the Visconti Black.

I am smitten with Aurora Black. I gave it a shot with my Pilot M90 F after having heard so many good words on this ink. This ink has an excellent flow and nice rich black color.

Still trying to like this one, but I'm afraid I don't understand fascination with it. In my opinion Waterman Black is much better ink.

Adam, many fpn users on the left hand side of the pond seem to be attracted by blunt solid color. For the "black is black" lovers Aurora, with is dark as a black hole spectrum along with the perfectly balanced and safe properties is one of the top choices out there. Herbin's Perle Noire is its closest rival, noticeably permanent and similar behavior. I'm in love as well with blacks with an attitude, like the Waterman's Noire you mention. Elegant to an extreme. We should be grateful the market offers us choices, so we all can be happy!

Very nice review, thank you.

Whenever I get a new old (vintage) pen, first I almost always fill it with Aurora Black. If the pen won't write with Aurora Black, it probably won't write with anything. Usually I will leave Aurora Black in the new pen for at least 72 hours. It seems to me that the ink lubricates and cleans a pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
