Diamine Ruby

Review of Diamine Ruby Ink someonesdad 12 Feb 2009

Paper: HP 120 gsm Premium LaserJet

Pen: Hero 332, line width 0.40 mm

 

This red ink was a gift from Strang, who has been getting me addicted interested in various inks.

 

Drying time: 3 s 5 s 10 s 20 s

 

I can leave the cap off the pen for 5 minutes and the ink starts up again in a few mm of writing.

 

Compared to Herbin Perle Noire, which is normally what I use in this pen, it seems a touch drier. But the flow is fine for my tastes.

 

I see essentially no shading or feathering on this paper. The ink is definitely not sensitive to hand oils.

 

I wrote on a piece of cheap copy paper and dunked the writing in water. After rubbing, the paper was started to abrade, but the ink was still readable. While not perhaps waterproof, I'd definitely call it water-resistant.

 

I only have two other red inks: a small sample of Tiananmen Red from Noodlers and Pelikan brilliant red. This Diamine Ruby has more magenta than the Tiananmen. The Pelikan red is like weak Kool-Aid.

 

Here's a red Staedtler Liquid 7 roller ball pen. It's a nice, deep red, but I like the Diamine Ruby better.

 

Overall, I really like this red ink. I have no strong reason to look for a different red ink.

Other comments that didn't make it onto the page:

 

There's no bleeding or show-through on this paper (I would have been surprised had there been). It dries satisfactorily for me, but a lefty overwriter is probably going to have problems with it. I like using red ink to mark up documents and this ink fits my needs just fine.

Looks like a pretty good dry time by most measures, but as you mentioned, a lefty overwriter is likely to have problems.

Thank you for the review. On my monitor, this looks quite similar to De Atramentis Carmine Red, which I quite like. Is there anyone out there who has experience with both inks who can comment?

That's going on my to buy list. I wanted something darker teh skrip red and lighter than Monaco red and that looks like it will fit the bill nicely.

BTW, I've discovered that the problem I was having with Noodlers and other inks drying up in that one particular pen is caused by the pen. I switched to another model of the same pen that is well-behaved with the Herbin inks and this Diamine Ruby behaves very nicely in it. I just tried out the North Sea Blue you sent me and it's another surprising ink with a wonderful property -- it dries almost immediately. Based on an active thread here on FPN, I tried mixing a little with FPN brown and it makes a lovely blue-black ink. So your ink donations are keeping the Idaho simpleton busy...

Today I wrote with this Diamine Ruby on a piece of copy paper and dunked it in some water for 2.5 hours. The Ruby ink was completely gone. I also did this with some Swisher's North Sea Blue on the same piece of paper and it was just barely readable.

 

But the Diamine Ruby will survive getting completely wet and being rubbed on a bit. Thus, I wouldn't hesitate to use it in a notebook, but I wouldn't expect the writing to survive arbitrary immersion. But it will take getting wet, then drying.
