Journal #01 :)

Dear FPN colleagues,

I did it!

My first journal in A6 format (which my wife took in about 2 seconds ...). I used Clairefontaine paper 100 gsm, 11 signatures of 4 sheet of A5 paper and a pocket on the inner back side and did the coptic stitch which is wondefully explained in the DIY section (the pinned one on the top of the forum done by robeck- if you haven't noticed yet, apologies to all others). Again, kudos to the maker of the DIY section!

It really isn't hard, a few hours of work (I sew the first bookblock in one hour and a half, the second one went quickly in about one hour), and you're done! I need to find a better suply of art, mull paper in the future (I spent quite some time to find Clairefontaine paper in my country).

On the other hand, I had luck regarding the more common supplies. The covers were cut from a B1 sheet of hard cover cut to measure in the print shop and the guy there gave me some material to do the covers, too, although it is blue which i'm not really fond of.

I decided to equip the journal with an elastic band which seems to be a wise decision. I used ordinary wood glue dilluted with tap water (ratio was 5 glue: 1 water). I did glue the bookblock with PVA glue, but I think this isn't necessary as far as structure is concerned - but it helps to cover the blank spaces between signatures which seems more easthetic to me. I used PVA glue again, when gluing the bookblock to the cover at the most inner points close to the spine, so it would be more elastic and resilient to wear. Beware, do not glue the bookblock to the cover spine!

I did find many mistakes, but that is normal for the first journal, I suppose. I think that the most important thing for a newbie is to have order in the making and it is useful to sew about 5 bookblocks and do 5 covers than doing one at a time.

All criticism is much appreciated as I intend to do the second one soon!

Regards,

gyrosan

 All you folks who are making these gorgeous journals are just whetting my appetite to use the materials I've purchased to make my own. One of these days....

That's lovely!

I've made very simple, glued notebooks with postcard covers, but these "professional" jobs are amazing.

Thank you (and all the other members who have gone to the trouble of showing us their handiwork) for the inspiration and encouragement to have a go.

Excellent, very professional. Plus, it gets me energized to start mine.

Where instructions for the elastic band also in the DIY section?

Very nice job. I'm sure your wife will enjoy it

Now you will need to make one for yourself.

Just found this thread.

Marvellous notebook and glad your wife liked it so much. I've made fourteen notebooks so far and they are ALL in use - some by my family but most by me. My diary collection has really expanded since I started making my own notebooks.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers,

Dean (robeck)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
