Quick comparison of Sheaffer PFM I & Legacy I

I finally got a Legacy (I), black with chrome cap (sort of PFM IV-look), which I ordered a while ago but could only collect from customs today. I have been lusting after this pen for quite a while (despite the fact that I already have a PFM I or possibly because I like that pen so much) and it's very beautiful and a good writer.

I'd love to read a comparison between the PFM and the Legacy I.

Jon

Jonro, you asked for it, so here it is:

My particular pens are a bit difficult to compare as they have completely different nib sizes: My PFM I has a medium palladium silver nib, whereas the Legacy sports a very broad right oblique 18K gold nib. Due to the materials used the Legacy nib feels much softer.

Both pens are very good, wet writers that will write on anything with any (FP- ;) ) ink I've tried. Yet both nibs showed some skipping or rather hard starting on some downstrokes at the beginning, so I had to very carefully smooth away their "baby bottoms" (it found it weird that the new old stock Legacy had this problem and I tried all kinds of other remedies first, but it was really a 'baby bottom' effect that caused the hard starting/skipping).

The - all metal - Legacy is a tiny bit longer than the - plastic - PFM, and it weighs 35 grams capped and 20 uncapped compared to the PFM's 20 (capped) and 10 (uncapped) grams (sorry, I made a mistake here in the handwritten comments). I was very surprised to discover that the difference in weight that everybody always comments on when comparing these two pens hasn't bothered me at all so far. This must be because - like the PFM - the Legacy is very well balanced.

Finally, there's the difference in filling systems, and while the cartridge option that the Legacy offers can certainly be handy sometimes, I definitely prefer the PFM's snorkel system: it's mess-free and the parts seem to move more easily than the Legacy's touchdown mechanism (the Legacy has a special converter that can be filled like the sac of a touchdown pen).

All in all I'd say that both pens are really brillant writers that feel and look good too.

nice handwriting and nice pfms :)

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Nice pens. I have several of each and about the only thing I have ever found is that over long writing sessions the weight of the Legacy and Legacy II starts to show. They are both very well balanced and so the weight is certainly a non-issue.

I used to have a PFM II and and both a Legacy I and Legacy II and definitely preferred the PFM. The weight of the Legacy gets a little oppressive after a while - the PFM feels more like it's designed for long writing sessions.

Thanks for the review, Nellie. If I have an opportunity, I'll try a Legacy, but it sounds like the PFM is still the clear winner (and I love my PFMs).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
