Conway Stewart Steinway

 

Length: 5 3/4 inches capped, 5 1/2 inches uncapped (I do not post this pen)

 

Weight: 1oz capped, .5oz uncapped

 

Materials used: Black resin, gold plated accents, solid 18k gold ring on bottom of cap, solid 18k gold nib

 

Filling System: Lever Fill

 

Edition Size: 1853

Based on the Conway Stewart Churchill design, Steinway has collaborated with Conway Stewart to create a Limited Edition Fountain Pen. I first saw this pen while surfing the internet looking at prices for Steinway pianos. As I am sure you all know, Steinway makes top of the line pianos. Steinway also happens to be a sponsor of the School of Music I attend at the University of Utah.

Once I laid eyes on the Steinway, I knew I had to have it. The pen has a great size, comparable with a MB 149. Posting this pen would make the pen a very long 7 inches. I personally prefer a non-posted pen to write with. The Steinway badging is what drew me to this pen, it’s what separates this pen from any other Churchill.

This pen is bottle fill only via a lever filler. You can get a full 14 drops on ink with each refill, a good amount. Writing is very smooth. I currently have a Medium, 1.1, Italic nib. Like I said, it is smooth, however my only grip is there is not very much line variation, even when holding the nib at a 45 degree angle. I assume that down the road this pen will make a visit to Pendemonium for a nib makeover.

The Churchill is a great all around pen, substantial size, not too heavy, great filling mechanism, and beautiful design. Add on top of that Steinway badging and as Emeril Lagasse would say, you've just "kicked it up a notch"....BAM!!!!

 

Full recommendation on this one!

Nice looking pen! I like the badge, too, although it would be meaningless for someone like me, as I am not a musical person. Looks great, though - and look at that box! Quite a presentation. :)

What a beautiful pen. The glossy black finish is so reminiscent of a Steinway's lacquer - and the lyre is the perfect finishing touch. I'm highly partial to plain black and gold pens ; seems to me like the equivalent of a dinner jacket (US: tuxedo ;) ), unfailingly elegant. This is one of the nicest I've ever seen.

Is it my computer or is the badge on the top of the pen sort of jaggedy? I guess I owuld expect a nice smooth engraving.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this, I just now noticed your question today. Anyway, no it not your computer, it is a "jaggedy" engraving. It would have been nicer to have a Laser engraving. I don't know if CS was being stylistic or cheap. Either way, the jaggedy edges are only noticable up close.

Being a pianist myself,i would love to own that pen.But the $$ is just way out of my reach.

Still,a splendid pen and review indeed!!!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
